    Default Having to start over...

    Hey all,

Not a sympathy post; just venting and looking for a bit of advice.

For the second time in my life we have a total loss that directly affects one of my favorite hobbies which is music/playing guitar. We bought this current home almost four years ago and one of the selling points for me was the beautifully finished basement; it became my "haven." More than enough space for three of my favorite hobbies: guitar playing/music, gaming, and finally exercise.

This past weekend in SE Michigan we had 9 inches of rain in a 6 - 7 hour period and the Detroit Pumping Station that services our area failed....we had over five feet of water in the basement. We discovered it at 7AM Saturday morning (midnight the night before I went downstairs to shut the lights off before going to bed; little did I know it would be my last) and everything was fine. Around 9AM the city pumps turned on and a few hours later it was safe to go downstairs.

Everything was destroyed...everything. Stuff was literally floated or thrown to other rooms in the basement including our refrigerator which was full....as for the relevance to this forum all eleven of my guitars (including my patent pending wolf I bout over thirty years ago, three amps, 2x12 cab, full pedalboard, laptop with music/recordings/tabs, sheet music books, cables/equipment, etc....all gone.

We are currently fighting with the insurance and city as of course despite what happened they want to call it an act of God etc etc and not pay anything...luckily we are good at keeping receipts; over $40,000 in damage and loss and another $10,000 we estimate that we do not have paperwork for; the second adjuster is coming today because I nearly lost it with the first one and basically threw him out of our home.

At some point; God knows when; if I am able to rebuild again I suppose I want to keep it simpler. Maybe only a guitar or two and one amp set-up and that is it...was interesting in seeing the thoughts of the group. I was thinking a LBX and either 1x12 or 2x12 and perhaps the new 5150 in satin black and call it a day....of course with effects but even then I will likely go lighter and simpler. Again this is assuming we get a dime from the insurance; we emptied our savings just to buy back the essentials.

    Thanks for listening.
    It's 5150 time!

    Dude, that suck.

Unfortunately, insurance policies usually cover what coming down damage (through the roof), but not water coming up (floods, water backup, etc.).

If you have the water backup rider, you should be good, otherwise, you are probably going to have a fight with them.

I can't imagine losing all my gear.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Basements suck. I feel for you. Mine is all of a sudden after 32 years starting to leak during thunderstorms. I have 2 sump pumps already. In fact I have a contractor coming in next week for some work. I just pray it works. Insurance even if you have a rider for basement flooding due to sump pump failure is not to good. Then if you place a claim they jack up your premiums. My advice to any young people on here is do not buy a house with a basement if you can. Good luck.

When all else fails, hire a lawyer. Litigation has a funny way of getting people to pay.

    Good idea.

Man, I'm so sorry to hear about this... I really hope the insurance comes through for you.

If it helps, I recently downsized to an LBX coupled with a 1x12 EVH cabinet and I'm pretty thrilled with it. I don't miss lugging my old Peavey 212 combo amp at all.

I want to add an EVH 5150 series guitar, but I'll only do it if I part with one of my (3) current guitars before I buy a new one. I'm all about downsizing now too at my age. 3 guitars don't take up much space, but I want everything simple now.... either the '98 Blue Peavey Wolf, EVH R/W/B striped, or Kramer PCII Custom will be hitting the block soon.

If I was better at swapping out new pups and could install a kill switch in my Kramer, I'd probably just keep the Kramer since it would just essentially be a EVH 5150 series anyway. I wish I was as talented at the luthier stuff as a lot of you guys are.

Man, I knew about the guitars but all the rest of the damage/impact is awful too. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Hopefully you find a good adjustor who can help get you some financial relief.

An LBXII with a 1x12 would be my first choice if you're going for a smaller rig. Or just bump to a 50w 5150iii head to get all the bells and whistles. I downsized from a 100w 5150iii and 2x12 to the 50w with a 1x12 and have zero regrets.

If you haven't I'd play one of those new 5150 series guitars before buying one. The pickup selector position is smack dab in the middle of my forearm when tapping. I'd prefer the first year versions sans killswitch with the selector on the bottom horn. Of course, YMMV and it may be no issue for you.

    I agree with Fudd.

    You also have my condolences.

When the tough stuff is done, come back to the links and enjoy a convo about gear and what to do moving forward when you're head is in a good space for it.

    What’s a basement?

In all seriousness though that’s horrible dude. Honestly though I think you need to worry about getting through the issues with your insurance company before you talk about replacing your music stuff. Honestly that just doesn’t seem like the most important thing right now, and you’re probably not in the greatest headspace as has been mentioned, to talk about it. I think when you get everything in order and you’re really ready to make some purchases, then come and ask.

Best of luck to you guys man. I feel for you.

Thanks all...so they officially gave us the middle finger today stating all the excuses; one of my closest friends is a lawyer and will be all over it.

As for the other comments I agree...crazy; all my hobbies, memories, memorabilia....everything gone just like that. The basement was one of the reasons we upgraded to this house four years ago and was seriously the perfect haven for me.....oh well.

Fuck mother nature and old city infrastructure.

That is horrible. I am so sorry for you losing what you did. If/when you're ready to acquire some replacement gear, make sure to reach out here. I'm sure we're all ready to help out in any way that we can.

On another note my laptop and all hard drives/cds are gone as well...would anyone be willing to share the JF Rocks collection of tabs and videos? He was always one of my references and as a former moderator over there it hurts that I no longer have any of it.
