"On Fire" solo album vs. "On Fire" solo Live 10-15-77
I've been working on a transcription of the album version of "On Fire" lately. I've finished my part and now it is being worked into a score by my friend Matt who did the same for the "Eruption" transcription.
In the process of doing this, I thought it was interesting to see the differences in the solo on the album versus some of the more coherent live versions, particularly the version from the famous Pasadena Civic show on 10-15-77, otherwise known as the 'Nightmare Before Halloween' bootleg.
I've found that the album version contains many inconsistencies in comparison with most of the later live versions which almost always follow the same consistent pattern that is found in the live version from the 10-15-77 show.
"On Fire" solo from the first album:
"On Fire" solo from 10-15-77 Pasadena Civic show:
I have a feeling that Eddie actually intended to execute the solo as he did it in the 10-15-77 live version. He sticks to this basic pattern for almost every live version of the solo. The album version pattern was never repeated and there are some odd positions and patterns that seem to have occurred in the moment.
I think the album version's lack of a truly consistent pattern has led to many people struggling a bit with it. For me personally, I like to execute it the way that I believe Eddie intended to execute it by following the consistent patterns present in the 10-15-77 version which is essentially repeated for most live performances of the solo.

As I'm sure you probably already know, Garbeaj,
Pasadena '77 is actually jam packed, with precious Edward signature lix...
It was basically my bible, for many years.
One could pick out lix from that recording, that would eventually be used, years later, on yet to be released VH albums....
For example, the extra SGMAD solo contains several Hang "Em High, and Fools lix...
But I'm sure you'll claim that you already told me that...
Yes, a joint, and a few beers, brought out the real Edward...
I left a lot of periods above, because I'm fairly certain you are now going to put a lot of words in my mouth...
Please don't![]()
