Default "The VH Tribute Concert Focus Should 100% be on Pop" - Wolf on Trunk

    BLABBERMOUTH.NET

WOLFGANG VAN HALEN Says EDDIE VAN HALEN Tribute Concert 'Definitely Should Happen'

    June 16, 2021

In a June 14 interview with SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk", Wolfgang Van Halen discussed his plans to eventually organize a tribute show in honor of his father, Eddie Van Halen, who died last October.

"I definitely think that would be a great thing to do," he said.

"It's not in the immediate plans, 'cause that's a lot of moving parts that you've gotta corral to get that to happen.

But I definitely think it should happen.

    Absolutely."

Asked how he envisions the tribute concert taking place in terms of which musicians should be involved, Wolfgang said:

"I have no idea. All I know is that the focus should a hundred percent be on Pop.

While it could be a celebration of VAN HALEN and the band's history, I think more than anything, it should be focused on him…

It's a tall ask and a big thing to figure out. But I do think it should happen at some point."

Last November, Wolfgang told Entertainment Tonight that proceeds from any tribute show in honor of his father will go toward Eddie's favorite charity, Mr. Holland's Opus, which helps underprivileged students access musical instruments.

Proceeds from the debut solo single from Wolfgang's solo band MAMMOTH WVH, "Distance", are also benefiting Mr. Holland's Opus.

This past February, former VAN HALEN frontman Sammy Hagar told Kyle Meredith that he will make every effort to take part in the Eddie Van Halen tribute concert.

"I have nothing to do with the Eddie Van Halen legacy," he said. "That's their business — that's Wolfie, Alex Van Halen Eddie's brother; they're family members.

Whoever wants to call me up and say, 'Here's the date,' I will be there.

I don't care where I am. I'll cancel a solo show if I need to. [Laughs]

That's something VAN HALEN would never do. I always make that joke — canceling a show was out of the question with VAN HALEN.

I went out sick without being able to sing, Eddie went out with a crutch, Alex went out with a fucking neck brace — we wouldn't cancel shows.

But I will cancel my show for a tribute to Eddie any day."

Wolfgang joined his father in VAN HALEN for the band's 2007 reunion tour with singer David Lee Roth, replacing Michael Anthony.

MAMMOTH WVH's self-titled debut album was released on June 11 via Explorer1 Music Group/EX1 Records.

MAMMOTH WVH will support GUNS N' ROSES a U.S. tour, beginning on July 31 at Hersheypark Stadium and concluding in early October with a two-night run at the Hard Rock Live Arena in Hollywood, Florida.

Agreed it should be 100% on Ed. But it really needs to happen before or on the 1 year anniversary of his death. This can't be done 3 years from now or anything like that.

Who is going to organize it would be a good question.
    Right here I say....

I don’t know…it’s just hard to imagine other guitarists playing Ed’s role for this show. I feel like most of the usual suspects they’d try to get wouldn’t do Ed’s playing proper justice. And the players who would do it justice aren’t big enough names.

I’d feel better about it if it were people Ed had legitimate relationships with. Lukather, Thorn, Nuno, maybe Cantrell? And Wolfgang, if he feels up to it or has the desire. I understand his declining playing Eruption on the Grammy’s, but I feel like this would be a bit different.

I feel as though they should include the players who certainly won't do Ed's music justice, but were hugely influenced by him. Many players have their own sound and just to play something Ed wrote would be a fine tribute. No one could sing like Freddie Mercury but the tribute they did for him was pretty awesome.

It would be great if Al was an active member of a tribute--I'm sure he would be. But I mean up there playing drums for some...or all...of it.

Just like the Mercury tribute, Extreme should totally be involved for multiple reasons. But its not up to me; whatever Wolf & Al think will do Ed justice.

In a way, I think it would be better without Sam and DLR, keep the focus on Ed, not on the never ending "who do you like better?" argument.

Edit: and don't invite Dave Grohl. Nothing against him, but he seems to show up to every one of these type of events. Tired of seeing him.

OH Dave Grohl will be there. You can be sure of that. Eddie Trunk too.

What I would love is Extreme doi what they did at the Freddie tribute. They IMO are the only band that likely could do a VH medley justice. I mean they could do Queen and their singer already has done both DLR and Sammy. If The Circle plays, maybe somebody can drop a weight on Vic's finger. Let Nuno sub in

Not sure where Wolfgang is going with this. Ed did not write the songs by himself. Certainly, Dave and Sammy had a big role to play irregardless of who you might like better. Without Dave, I don't think we would be hear some 40 years later talking about the Van Halen band. He took them to the top of the mountain.

I would love to see Dave and Sammy do like Dave tried to do with Steve Vai: play stuff and talk about the songs and so on, in this case talk about working with Ed.

He’ll be there, if I had to wager. DLR played at Dave’s Bday show at the Forum.

Yes, Grohl and Taylor Hawkins are both huge VH fans. Hawkins even had a kick drum head with Al's face on it for some of the Foos live shows a couple or few years back. And a couple years ago Hawkins had his side band that he sings in play a festival where they played nothing but CVH tunes for the entire set. Its on YouTube somewhere and pretty sure it was posted on here, but I can't remember what the name of hid side band is. It was a pretty sweet gig though, and even though he is definitely not a singer, I actually prefer his rough and tumble vocals over Grohl's.

Grohl is extremely talented, but there is just something bland about everything he does. Even back in the day up here when the Seattle music scene was really happening when I was in HS and college, I felt he was a bit overrated as a drummer. Matt Cameron w/Soundgarden was the superior player around here IMO, but I'd also take Sean Kinney(AIC), Dave Abbrusezze(Pearl Jam), Greg Gilmore(Mother Love Bone) and the dude from Mudhoney who's name escapes me over Grohl behind the kit back then.

Yeah I’m not a huge FF fan, myself.

But they seem like really good guys who love to play music together for their fans and have a great time doing it, while not taking themselves too seriously.

Any performer that breaks their leg. Leaves the show to get a cast put on and then comes back to play the show is deserving of high praise.

I really want Sammy, Mike, Alex & DLR there, hopefully to play a few VH songs. I want Steve Vai & Billy Sheehan there. I also want Extreme there. Of course Wolfie should be there. I'd like it to be as epic the Freddie Mercury tribute. Eddie deserves that! But we aren't in 1992 and Covid still isn't over. So I have no clue what this show would look like.
