Deacon came up with that bass line, which is the reason that song is big.
Deacon came up with the whole thing. In Queen, they didn't share writing credits like that. They had a rule that the composer had to come up with the melody, hook and the lyrics. They had some fierce battles about getting songs on albums.

Yeah, I thought that was interesting about Queen, not a lot of co-writing until the later part of their career (with Freddie).
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Yes, towards the end it was all "written by Queen."

One of my favorite movies is That Thing You Do! as I love how it basically shows how a song can change when someone hears it differently. In that movie the character Guy Patterson changes the whole drive of the song as it was written as a ballad and he turned it into a song that became a hit. Sure he didn't write one chord or pen a verse but his contribution completely changed a song that would have gone nowhere had it stayed in it's intended format. I'm not saying that he should have deserved songwriters credit for that but it certainly shows what can happen. I'm sure Ed and Al spent many hours jamming just the two of them and I know ed has said before that he has played things in passing that would have gone to the wind if Alex had not stopped him to work out that idea. It's hard to know how much Mike was around or what he contributed. I have always been curious about the line in the Right Now video where it says right now Mike is thinking about a solo album. It made me wonder if he had riffs and ideas to do something like that. I'm honestly surprised he hasn't put something together with his famous friends just for fun. Why not do that? It's certainly easy enough nowadays.
