I think it would have been really interesting to hear him use his talents like this in Van Halen with Sammy fronting the band. He clearly has a very strong sense of melody and arranging. Him writing with Sam and Ed would probably have been unreal.

Some cool breaks and creativity, especially on 'Stone' beginning at 3:30! (I hear his dad's DNA in that riff)

I think the majority of them have choruses that do the Major 3rd ending... like... every single one of them almost. My ear got really tired, and I love 3rds, but too much for my taste.

Really looking forward to hearing how he develops perhaps 3 or 4 albums from now!

Lol. I suppose there's an outside chance one of these tunes could be, but to be timeless, generally, it has to be a hit right out of the gate. I don't hear any hit songs here.

Some good tunes but nothing that is blowing me away like when I first heard classic songs of the past.

Eddie didnít pick up a guitar and become a legend overnight. He worked the gift he had. Just like every guitar legend.

This notion that Eddie made gifted music but Wolfie is making talented music is silly, IMO.

I'd disagree. EVH's music was transcendent from VH 1 onwards.

I'm not hearing a ton of inspired, out of this world moments on Wolf's album, even though I like most of the tracks.

The ability to connect/resonate an audience on a visceral level, isn't just the ability to write a hook or singalong chorus, it is a gift beyond talent IMO.

Why is it necessary to compare Wolfgang's music to his Dad's though? "Jan's music was nowhere near as transcendent as Eddie's" just isn't a conversation that's had, so I don't know why it has to go the other way around.

Eddie was a one-in-a-billion musical legend. I'm not sure why anybody would expect Wolfgang to meet or exceed that when 99.9% of the population doesn't come close. Especially when he's still putting out music that's indicative of talent greater than 99.5% of people anyway.

its a solid release. Wolf has some exceptional talents on all the instruments. To me, the only 'weak' part was the vocals; they seemed a bit soft for the vibe of the record. Don't get me wrong - they're still really good and an order of magnitude better than anything I'd sing - just a bit soft is all.
Winners come and go; legends are forever.

I think I agree with you in that his vocals are objectively good. I know the rock music of the last 20 years follows that formula with soft, melodic singing over heavy riffs but that's not really my taste either.

Review from this Gen Xer following:

First browse though: capable, melodic and a little gritty.
    Another gander: surprising, layered, detailed
    Further exploration: human, fun, authentic

The music is fun. His influences are prevalent, but his own voice shines through. And in his voice, you discover who he is. Wolfgang is no sheltered kid. He carries scars, but also exposes his open wounds in the way that someone who has embraced rock music would. He doesn't whine like Michael Stipe, marinate in pretentiousness like Noel Gallagher, nor does he throw himself down the stairs willingly like his father with the hopes of landing on his feet. It's clever in places, always tight and isn't afraid to make it light when a harmony needs to release the tension.

My only small criticism is really more about how music is made in general now. In the late 'oughts and early teens, my battle was about brickwalling. Now, it's about synched drums and auto-tuned vocals. The record had the potential to really open up and sound a lot bigger, but those two production techniques make it a little less Mammoth sonically. Thank god he didn't use the autotune effect like most musical hacks do today. Imperfections are actually the space in music that makes us sound unique. Choruses fill our ears and vibrate with deep resonance when they take up the space between the notes. Wolf is capable of the performance, so it would have been nice to hear that. But, pretty much all pop/mainstream music has it nowadays, so it isn't just him. It's also less pronounced with him, so he gets a few extra marks.

Great first album Wolf! It's a joy to listen to.

The intro on one of the songs sounds like the beginning of a Stones song...I believe it's Monkey Man. Anyone else hear that?

An insert is signed, not the vinyl itself
