Who knows, who cares what he likes and doesn't like. It has no bearing on anything.

He pulled it off. I don't love the Foo Fighters, but I can appreciate how fucking incredible Dave Grohl is on that first album.

As Brett mentioned, it's something that Ed never did.

I was about to write that Prince was the king of doing it all himself......but as I thought further I don't think he ever really played drums on any of his albums, and I know he did not play the horns on his songs that had them.

My point is not many people have the gift for writing tunes that you remember forever. Ed had that gift. Van Halen as a band had the gift.
Did Ed write most of the vocal melodies on VH albums? That is one thing I honestly don't know, but I tend to think DLR and then Sammy came up with most of those. I'm not discrediting Ed at all, as even if he did not come up with most of the vocal melodies he laid the musical bones of all those songs.

No idea if Ed wrote any of the vocal melodies. I would think that Dave/Sammy came up with most if not all of them. VH as a band wrote great songs. Sometimes the dynamics of 4 different people interacting yields better results than one person doing everything themselves. I don't care if it's multiple people are one person, I just care about the end product, the tunes.

You can't discredit a guy who changed rock guitar. Eddie could have retired after Fair Warning and he still would have had the same legacy.

Eddie would have been a legend if he had retired after the debut album.

Guitar is so over done, the book has been written so long ago that it doesnít make sense these days to me to perfect the codified shredding style because that shit is boring as fuck to see, and not visually exciting, at all. This instrument is done to death so doing any little thing different, even if it means doing something exactly the same as someone else long ago is still unique in a way that nobody now really plays that way at all. Now, the fun thing is taking that style and applying it to other genres and in other ways with other notes that Ed didnít, thatís kind of interesting. Especially if you can bring his phrasing and some of his shapes into a different element.

I think the real problem here is Wolfgang just hates boomers.
Wolf hates boomers. Ok then. Nice generalization. That means he hated his Pop and hates his Uncle Al and his Mum and his Uncle Patrick and...

JD is completely right on this. While there were some (very few) that were critical of him but the vast majority of us were fans of him and over time that's done nothing but go up.

Ed preached that from the beginning. Find yourself, find your sound...experiment.
It's fun to try and emulate your favorite player, but to be able to grow as a player it should go beyond that. It's fun going beyond as well.
