I still pick up the guitar and play VH riffs and Iíve been playing guitar for over 30 years. I like playing them theyíre fun.

I just think the longer you play you obviously develop your own style. Itís not a conscious thing, it just happens as time goes by. You can try all you want to sound like Ed, but you wonít because youíre not. You are you.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with chasing Ed's playing or tone. I look at is as sport and get a ton of enjoyment from it. But there's a reason my top 10 guitar players don't have anybody who's even close to being an Ed clone in there. There's a lot more to the instrument, especially if you're playing live.
Thereís playing like EVH and there is playing guitar, I like the separate the two myself. To me he is like the god father of a certain SoCal style, in veins of what the guy who invented flamenco must have been like. Itís fun to work at the discipline of EVH regardless, but yea you canít just rip off and cover him and expect anyone to give a shit about you.

"I’m being myself – I’m not sitting there doing covers of Panama"

We know, you've reminded us over and over and fucking over you're being yourself.

Write a song as good as Panama.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with people playing covers of Panama. It just demonstrates how good of a songwriter the real genius in the family was.

Panama is a damned good rock song.

Itís not a fucking magnum opus of songwriting.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to play like Eddie. Even Eddie learned to play Clapton note for note.

Definitely nothing wrong with it. Every guitarist on the planet starts off learning other peopleís stuff.

Ed moved on from that fairly quickly.

Just about everything I learned about guitar was from listening and watching Eddie play. I copied as much as I could. Frankly though, I totally suck but enjoy trying to play like Eddie. I guess I'm not good enough to get my "own sound" as I never really moved on from that. That might disappoint Eddie, but it's still fun. I know I'm ham and eggs.

Panama is not a 7 minute song with 19 time changes, it's not complicated, it's simple, no shit. The point I was making above is it's a tune that you remember after the first time you hear it, and you want to keep hearing it. It's actually harder to write a simple tune with a great melody that people remember forever than a long winded complex tune or a simple tune with a weak melody that nobody remembers even after hearing several times. Eddie was able to write complex or simple tunes that people remember. He was a genius.

I haven't anything from Wolf that matches any of that. I know, it's his first album, he has time to grow.

As for his comment, it came across as sort of a back handed comment at VH fans. He seems to like to do that at times but he also simultaneously placates the VH audience because they will be the ones buying his shit out of the gate.

I stopped playing VH riffs 4 years into playing guitar. I've been playing for 37 years. I got completely away from it because it was a dead end for me and I liked a lot of other styles or music. I've been into jazz/blues guys for a long time and still like some metal but I will always prefer solid tunes with a great vocal melody over instrumental material or progressive (light progressive now) stuff like Dream Theater.

And, I do occasionally pick up my Frankie replica and play I'm The One...or Panama, it's fun, and it reminds me how old I am. lol. It brings me right back to my youth and the first 4 years I played.... and that is the magic of Eddie.

I think itís just not music you like. You said it yourself youíre into jazz and blues and have been for a long time. I canít imagine this kind of music would be up your alley anyway.

And for Wolfgang to put together a solid album where he played every single instrument I think itís pretty fucking impressive. Ed never did that. And there arenít that many people that can.

It's a short list of artists that have gone the "I'm doing it all myself" and pull it off.

He pulled it off. I don't love the Foo Fighters, but I can appreciate how fucking incredible Dave Grohl is on that first album.

As Brett mentioned, it's something that Ed never did.

Yeah I think anybody who can pretty much come up with every idea for an album is pretty impressive. Heck even as much as he gets ragged on for his voice, I think a guy like Billy Corgan who pretty much wrote every Smashing Pumpkins riff, lyric and melody as an impressive feat. Its hard enough to come up with one album of riffs let along riffs, bass, drums, lyrics and melodic structure.

I never said what Wolf did wasn't impressive. He's obviously very talented. The major thing he has over his dad is his voice. But the main thing his dad had over everybody was his guitar playing and songwriting.

My point is not many people have the gift for writing tunes that you remember forever. Ed had that gift. Van Halen as a band had the gift.

I'm not hearing anything from Wolf that I instantly remember after hearing it or want to play again. The two tunes that I like the most are Don't Back Down and Mr. Ed. They're solid tunes.

Also, I love hard rock and metal so I am into heavy stuff and always will be. I played it for a long time. From a technical standpoint on guitar, I really like jazz/blues because it's challenging to me, more so than the shred stuff that I got under my belt a long time ago. It's more challenging partially because you have to play through changes and you learn how to play outside and come back in and land on a chord tone. It's the guitar nerd in me that enjoys digging into that shit. So you have to walk that line of thinking a bit but then not thinking about it.

This is a pretty interesting thread. I never got tired of the gimmicks and made myself learn how to play with the middle finger, and I made sure to get all the nuances down, one because I just liked the aesthetics of Edís playing. Guitar is so over done, the book has been written so long ago that it doesnít make sense these days to me to perfect the codified shredding style because that shit is boring as fuck to see, and not visually exciting, at all. This instrument is done to death so doing any little thing different, even if it means doing something exactly the same as someone else long ago is still unique in a way that nobody now really plays that way at all. Now, the fun thing is taking that style and applying it to other genres and in other ways with other notes that Ed didnít, thatís kind of interesting. Especially if you can bring his phrasing and some of his shapes into a different element.

I think the real problem here is Wolfgang just hates boomers.
