I wonder if this was when Dave was still in the band, when Sam joined, or that brief period in between? I'm gonna guess later in '85 when he was fucking with Sammy because of the longer hair since his was in a "tail" for this video, thus longer. See Farm Aid in September then again months earlier on Letterman in May and June. Depends on when he first started talking to Sam, which I can't remember how long before Farm Aid.

His shirt says '86 so I guess scrap the whole '85 thing. He did have a "tail" on the 5150 tour (from that recent guitar solo video on YT) but those polka dot pants he wore in '88, so?

Really cool on so many levels. He kind of is still fleshing it out a bit or not 100% sold on what he is playing at times. Kind of showing off a new baby.

Yes the tone here is better than 5150 and OU812. However this was in 1985. Dave may have technically been in the band. I think it was April 1st 1985 when news broke. Curious if Dave heard this or Sammy when doing 5150.

    Also playing a Charvel.

Oh yeah this kind of backs of my long held point of that the idea that Eddie just had riffs and Sam had to piece them together was just a bunch of BS. Like any other guitarist the guy was more than capable of putting Riff A to Riff B to Riff C. I mean this is really Amsterdam

    Great find

So good. You can tell that’s loud as hell in the studio while he’s riffing away. I loved the 80’s, what a time to be ALIVE.

That is one of the coolest videos to surface I've seen in years. How we all wish we could just be a fly on the wall and listen to Ed noodle for a few hours...

It makes me feel better as a guitarist to see him fumble around trying to find what he wants to play or not hitting it perfect the first time. Even the best guitarist gets some slop at times it appears.

As Fudd pointed out already, when I watch these videos I'm just amazed at how he can come up with these odd patterns, shapes, sequences, etc. that I would never think of in a million years of playing, yet he just puts together a beautiful sequence that's dizzying to the eye but sounds so simple when you hear it. I guess that's why he's a musical genius and I'm not
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Who is Van Halen Brasil and have they been living in the 5150 attic for 37 years?

    This is GREAT.

This made me happy. As others have mentioned, just watching his hands is mesmerizing. That effortless stretch...makes me like the song even more.

Whether is was recorded in '85 or a little later, I'm still blown away by how long he sat on this tune. I mean, he had a lot of it worked out already. It sounds pretty close to the finished song.

Has anybody ever noticed how similar the main riff of Cabo Wabo is to the opening riff of Amsterdam?
