Same with the Sunburst LPs. More were made (1500 depending on who you listen to) but they were hated. Not popular whatsoever.

Gibson had to virtually give them away to clear out their inventory come mid-1960.

Then came the next/new version of the Les Paul Standard in 61.

Gotta remember the time in which they came out and the music that was being produced.

They were heavy, very expensive and considered to be not very versatile sound wise. Also keep in mind that playing through cranked Marshalls wasnt a thing until 66.

It wasnt until Clapton plugged one in that people started going, Oh. Shit. What guitar was he using???

Nowadays it seems unconscionable for those guitars to be viewed as anything but legendary. But at the time they were just another guitar.

Hell, it wasnt until the mid 70s that the prices started going up and even then people were calling the likes of Joe Walsh and Tom Wittrock (Burst collector) CRAZY for paying $1000-2000 for a used guitar.

Nobody knew what was to come.

Jesus Christ. I wouldve mortgaged my house to buy every one of those and waited a few years.

By the way, joe Walsh sold jimmy page his les Paul #1 for 1200 bucks. Let that sink in. The guitar that jimmy used for kasmir thats probably worth half a mill on its own was bought for 1200 bucks.

Yup. Walsh was a regular buyer of LPs in the early 70s. And hey, $1200 bucks in the early 70s was a fucking tonne. Comes out to about $9000 in todays dollars.

In 1968, Billy Gibbons loaned a hunk-a-junk car to a girl friend of his who had to get out to LA for an audition. She got the gig. Sold the car, which Billy had nicknamed Pearly Gates, and sent him the money ($250) and he bought a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard.

The rest is history. Arguably the greatest sounding guitar in rock and blues history was purchased for $250 because a piece of shit car made it to LA.

"Don't Back Down" owes a debt to Nickelback's "Burn It To the Ground," right? The main riffs sound very similar to me.

    It's very familiar sounding...reminds me of a Marilyn Manson song...but I'm still digging Wolf's tune a lot.

I think that one's going to be awesome in concert.
