I am not countering this to argue - I saw your post as being very fair and balanced, and of course you're entitled to your own opinion - but to my ears I hear it differently; what I hear in Roth is what I hear in Sinatra: Roth isn't the best technical singer, but, like Sinatra, no one will confuse his voice with any other - and in this I am not referring to yelps or screams. I always found a unique depth and a warmth in Roth's voice, same with Sinatra, yet neither are technical singers.

One track which highlights the depth of Roth's vocals was in the (intro to the) chorus of Stand Up:

Thick, warm, deep, and powerful; the guy was a perfect match to EVH.

I think Dave hurt his legacy by releasing too many songs with subpar vocals 1995 - 2020. To the point that people now forget that the dude could actually sing quite well during his heyday. Now you hear "he was always a bad singer" which is not true at all. He would've done better if he had kept a headstrong producer like TT at his side.

While I donít understand the singing criticism on the first go around with Dave, it is a fact Warner Brothers almost replaced Roth with Hagar in 77-78 according to Ted Templeman. Read the book. Itís a good read.

You live in Somerville? Small world. I grew up & lived there for the first 25 years of my life. Lived at the top of Winter Hill at Broadway & Main. Still go to Olde Magoun's Saloon once a week or so for dinner and beers.

Ted considered it because he thought the unique things Dave did with his pitch (at times unintentional) might not go over with a fanbase that typically were used to polished singers like Sam, but soon came to realize that it was what made VH special and decided to instead try to tame the lion.

And I agree with an earlier post that surmised that Dave is like an untamed lion without TT

Its a great read, I have just gotten to the Sammy era. Its a hard book to put down.
What is understood need not be discussed - Sammy Hagar
You only have 12 notes, what you do with them is up to you - Edward Van Halen
