And it doesn't say "Dave can't sing," but he's certainly not the best singer in a traditional sense. What he IS though is one badass frontman whose attitude played a major role in why he was such a great vocalist for Van Halen.
    This.

I thought it well established that DLR's vocals weren't exactly the thing that sold the band to WB. It was a PA that got him in the band in the first place.

But I digress. Congrats on the book. Let the whiners whine about a few words.

But it is true. Like I said, check Ted's book and then talk about what a great natural singer Dave was. Unless you think he was bs-ing about all the additional work it required to get those performances, he wasn't that great of a singer. For Van Halen, he was phenomenal. Regardless, that's a publisher's blurb for the title. If you think it's going to be nothing but bashing DLR's singing ability in the book, then you're sorely mistaken.

Can you please elaborate on this? Also, curious as to why the picture of Gary isn't from his VH days? (Not not-picking; just genuinely curious).

    Thanks!

Would you guys relax please? I wouldnít call Dave a great singer either. I think he has a very cool voice and I love his vibe but I wouldnít call him a great singer in the traditional sense. Stop getting so offended by every little comment. MC is clearly a fan, not to mention a long time user here, and wrote a book about a band that we all love.

And stop with this whole lying BS because somebody shares an opinion you donít. It isnít a lie, itís someoneís O-P-I-N-I-O-N. And the FACT that Daveís vocals for years were an issue with the band getting signed, and that was told to them point blank, pretty much clearly lets you know that Dave wasnít the greatest singer to those who signed bands. Dave even mentioned feeling bad about thinking he was holding them back. He says so in his own book. Not to mention Ted Templeman mentioning the possibility in needing to replace Dave before they recorded the first album. And Dave took vocal lessons to improve before the first album was recorded. Those are the actual facts. The singer we hear on the first album is not the guy he was before. Guys need to get over it. I think the fact that Dave was able to turn all of this around and create what he did is pretty amazing, and speaks to how hard he worked. He certainly was not born with natural singing ability.

So instead of nitpicking this little thing and giving the guy shit just donít say anything. Either you want to buy the book or you donít.

Good grief fellas. Congrats MC. I am very happy for you, I know you put a lot of work into this.

Yeah, sure. So obviously you have to pay for the rights to photos that you don't own that go inside of a book. Rates vary wildly. For the cover though, it's exponentially higher to use an image there. The publisher initially wanted to use a pic of Eddie, but the book is about the band. Of course, there were four iterations of the group, but using four pictures featuring the same members in some of them looked sloppy. And I didn't want to do a Dave or Sammy one, because that also isn't representative of them as a whole. I decided to go with one of each member, but that's like paying for seven covers, which just wasn't in the budget, so I had to get creative. The Gary one, which I own, is a bit bothersome since it's post-VH, but I don't think the average fan is going to be upset about it.

    Hope that explains it!

I agree that Dave wasn’t a great singer out of the gate in VH, but Eddie wasn’t the player he became as heard on VHI either. Even just a year earlier on the Gene Simmons “Zero”and other early Demos, Eddie wasn’t at the level of his performance on VHI. These guys all grew to amazing musicians and really had talent.

Just make sure you get the story straight on how Eddie started on drums and Alex on guitar :-)

The funny thing about the whole "Dave could never sing" is that its really all due to Eddie. Think about summer of 1986 and how often you read in interviews of how Eddie was displeased with Dave because he couldn't sing. Repeat it enough times and its the truth. Similar to Diver Down and why so many people don't like it. Eddie stated that he hated it because it was half covers.

Hey count me in the group that had a belief because I worshipped Eddie. I am guilty. Anyway I truly think if they never broke up, you likely wouldn't be hearing the Dave could never sing comment. Today? Different story
A lot of truth to your statement.

Yeah, Dave wasn't a great traditional singer. But his unique delivery and phrasing, along with his one of a kind screams and just cool sounding baritone and charisma made him an all time great rock vocalist. He's not a Brad Delp or Steve Perry or Geoff Tate. But, on the flip side, those guys aren't Dave. I can't imagine any of those guys, or anyone else for that matter, singing Take Your Whiskey Home, Fools, Romeo Delight, On Fire etc better than Dave. And I dont think those guys wouldve done a better job on something like Big Bad Bill either.

And all anyone needs to do is check out any number of high quality bootlegs of the first two tours that have surfaced in the last couple years to know that the "Dave could never sing live" bullshit is just that, bullshit.

Dave is not a great technical singer but he's one of the greatest frontmen of all time and he was the perfect voice for VH. Hell, Ted Templeman said that the guy from the Bulletboys was a better singer than Roth was, but owning a room is the most important skill for a frontman. And very few guys owned a room the way that Roth did.
