EVH's "Jeff Beck" backstage jam

So I know that people here have mixed feelings about Dweezil Zappa's Eddie podcast.
But I happened to catch the first 15mn of his interview with Jennifer Batten (available for free). The theme was "did Jeff Beck influence Eddie?"
The podcast started with them saying "you would think it was Clapton and not Beck."

And then Dweezil played a private recording of Eddie jamming backstage - something from his private collection, that he recorded himself, that I've never heard.

Eddie was literally "quoting" Beck and sounding EXACTLY like Jeff Beck. He even shouted "Beck" while playing. The rest of the jam was funkier than what Eddie usually plays. This recording is truly a gem, very unique. Have you guys heard it? Really amazing stuff.

Ed was influenced by a lot of phenom players. The difference is that soup became Ed, whereas most of us can't weave it seamlessly together. Nuno Bettencourt explains this pretty well most of the time when it is brought up in conversation.

I swear I remember reading once that Randy Rhodes & one of the dudes from Quiet Riot went to see VH in the club days and Randy went to ask question Ed how he kept his guitar in tune and Ed casually said it was a trick he learned from Jeff Beck and than just threw the guitar he had into the case like a dead body into a duffle bag, which Randy & the Quiet Riot guy were both taken aback by. Both presumed Ed was being facetious about the questions to maintain secrecy.

I've subscribed to this podcast series, but have not yet listened to the 1984 episode with Jennifer Batten. However, I am going to guess the recording Dweezil is talking about is where Ed was jamming backstage on a strat with some members of Baby Animals while they were on tour together in the early 90s, and he does some Beck-like phrases during it. Here is the Youtube video of that, which was filmed by Dweezil.

Jeff Beck was Eddie van Halen before there was an Eddie van Halen. Similar to the effect Hendrix had.

The things he was doing with a guitar and the precision in which he did them, was awe-inspiring.

Still is, to this day.

Completely agree. They're both outside-the-box and a bit unorthodox in their approach to the guitar. Thankfully.

I like a few of his songs, but never really "got" Beck and the ppl who worship him. His 89 release Guitar Shop particularly irritated me. I couldn't understand how anyone could rate that above Satriani's Surfing With The Alien.

Different tastes, I guess. I actually prefer his live stuff. Just a much better representation of his playing and his music, IMO. He's put out a lot of live stuff over the past 20 years. I love all of it.

That's a true story. Ed was bigtime quiet about how he kept his guitar in tune. If you go back and read some of his earliest interviews, he never really explains how he does it. He just kind of skirts it.

Later on in his interviews he started to open up (after he started using floyd's) about removing anything that would bind the string. Even going as far as turning the ball end in the bridge to where the string stayed inline with the neck. Fucker was a genius.

As for the duffle bag, that's true as well. Guitar world did an interview with him back in the 90's and the author stated that when he grabbed the Frankie and a few others to head to the photo shoot, he threw them into the back of his truck with no case at all. The author stated that it sounded like it was like throwing a 2x4 into the bed of the truck. Ed smiled and said "I don't use cases" to the look of surprise from the author.

What amazes me about seeing and hearing Ed play that strat...........is that he still sounds like EVH. It proves to me that his sound is predominantly in his hands/fingers, and whether he is playing a guitar with humbuckers or single coil pickups, or through his old modded Marshall, an EVH 5150 amp, or some other small practice amp that he is still going to sound like EVH.

This. Tone’s in the fingers and technique, not a guitar or amp.

Same can be said for Beck, Page, Clapton, Hendrix, etc. They could be playing a Hondo and it’s going to sound exactly like them.

Pretty much. There were a few minor tweaks/changes done to the amp but nothing that would constitute a “modding”.

I knew a lawyer named Neil Kramer who worked for Bill Graham( rock promoter) long ago. He was a road manager and he knew Jeff Beck pretty well. He has some great stories most of which are x rated. I like Jeff Beck and I only saw him live once and thats when he had already gone into jazz. Guys Eds age where bound to be into him.
