Default EVH Microphone Placement and Number of Microphones

I have recently been trying to learn microphone placement for guitar speaker cabinets, but so far I am having difficulty. As a reference and a starting point, I was wondering if anyone knows what microphone placement EVH used. I am particularly interested in his live setups during the 80s - WACF, Fair Warning, 1984, 5150, and OU812 tours. However, I will gladly take any info I can get! If anyone has any info or pictures to share I would be quite grateful.

Also, did he tend to use a single microphone?

I believe for the first couple albums they used Shure SM57ís on the cabinets, with the head of the mic angled-offset to one side of the speaker cone.

Iím sure a combination of micís were used down the road, but I havenít heard what they used aside from the 57ís.

That would be a question that could only be answered by Rudy. Iíve never seen any reliable evidence of the exact mic placement for any live show during the classic Van Halen era.

sm57's for classic VH - but only Donn Landee could tell you post production magic. There are enough pics about to determine early placement if you hunt.

And I was using an SM57 too, which is the biggest piece-of-crap microphone ever. I never used one even in high school and here I am, Iím auditioning for Van Halen, through an SM57. I mean, I was an afterthought. They hand me a 57 and you canít even really hear me, and itís like, ďWhatís going on? This is Van Halen. This is supposed to be first class.Ē

From the pics Iíve seen from Sunset Sound the 57ís were a bit offset from the centre of the cone.

I think all of your excellent clips have great micíing and your own voodoo on it!

Malloy must be crazy...everyone knows the SM57 is STILL THE #1 mic in every studio and the 58 as well...vintage or new. That kindíve points to him not being a good fit right there!

Which was fairly obvious even before the one first album session photo came out. Just about everyone Iíve ever heard getting good sounds does that slightly off axis or direct placement just off the dome to accentuate the upper mids.

I want to say I read Ed once mentioned he thought Beta57 & 58's were better & that they were the original recipe for 57's & 58's before a certain year. I used to use one of each 6" away from the center of a speaker cone aimed directly at. The key was setting the trim on the input of whatever console being used - always crank it right before complete breakup. Doesn't get Ed sound, but a decent sound for crunchy guitar overall.
