    Gary Richrath, from REO, RIP.

One I should have mentioned in the “musicians that I have seen that are now dead” thread.

If we're talking great influential guitarists who haven't been heard or recognized lately... Go check out Robin Trower's latest project, Unites State of Mind.

Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...

In hindsite, I digress. The thread topic is without valid merit.

It's not as though there are photo's of EVH taken with other hotshot guitarist's like Randy Rhoads, Yngwie Malmsteen, George Lynch, or even Ritchie Blackmore.

I was just thinking the Guitar Magazine's frequently inquired asking guitarists about their opinion on other guitarists & gaining interview quotes. Some good some bad.

I guess SRV & EVH were never quoted about each other & perhaps never met or photographed together. Even though Ed was at one of his shows with Jeff Beck. Maybe SRV wasn't in the right mood to mix & mingle at the time.

Just so many others, Toni Iommi, Brian May, Allan Holdsworth, etc, etc... Different circles.

Funny thing is while SRV is loved back then, its not on the level that it is today. In fact you read reviews of the albums and some of them think a few of them are ho hum. Definitely praise with his playing but they did notice how it declined with him hitting the sauce. Ironic that the first guy who was supposed to be "the guy" was Robert Cray. He kind of got forgotten but he was supposed to be the one who saved the blues. The one who would bring balance to the Force (hey its May 4th)
I would agree, SRV was never, to my recollection, viewed as "all that" during his day. He was good, but nowhere near as revered as he seems to be now and considered one of the "top guitar players" back when he was alive. Not that I remember, anyway.

That's the thing with folks that die at their peak....they remain there in the eye of the public. They're not remembered for their decline, the band breaking up, disappearing or having a "not as successful" solo career for awhile, then the inevitable reunion and becoming a nostalgia act when they're too old to sell records anymore.

They remain as they were, in everyone's memory. Buddy. Janis. Jimi. Jim. Duane. Ronnie. Stevie. They never aged and "lost it". In fact, most of them got even bigger in the years after their deaths.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

    .
SRV was viewed as the best blues player in the World, possibly of all time, while he was alive.

Stevie also never really had a decline. He fought his demons and beat em, then died in a helicopter crash but his playing was always 10/10.

When Eric Clapton says your playing is coming from “somewhere else” as if he has a direct connection to a higher “power”.

That’s all you really need to know.

I don't know, dude. I'm pretty sure Stevie was kind of a big deal while he was actually still playing. Obviously, I'm biased being a Texas delta. I literally think he was on top back then. Out.
