EVH & SRV ???

Both EVH & Stevie Ray Vaughan are undoubtably top guitarists of the 1980's among several others of course....

But- SRV & EVH both dominated the top slots in several guitar magazines both recieving many well deserved rewards & accollades & so forth....

SRV- Photographed with Jeff Beck...among several other iconic guitarists...

EVH- Photographed with Jeff Beck...among numerous other contemporaries....Jimmy Page, Toni Iommi, Brian May, BB King, etc, ....

Point here mainly alluding to Guitar publications....

My question is- Am I the only one that finds it a tad bit odd that EVH & SRV have never to my knowledge ever been photographed together nor made interview quotes regarding each other.....

??????

I feel like I may have seen pics and read somewhere that EVH was backstage at a SRV concert or vice versa....doing the research now.

Not really that odd.

One was a straight up blues player and the other was a hard rock guitarist.

Therefore I don’t think they ever played on the same bill ever.

Yep... I've seen the photos too. There are on this site somewhere. Bowie is there too from memory.

I remember asking the same question, if EVH and SRV were photographed together. Apparently if some were taken, they haven't been released... yet.

SRV was obviously a great player. But I don't think he was ever in the discussion for "best of all time" like EVH. I don't think EVH was into the 3rd Blues wave of the 80s - SRV, Robert Cray, etc. I don't think he ever mentioned these guys even once. The blues stuff Eddie mentioned was always the 60s guys. British blues guys, that's what influenced him.

Yep. I'll agree that they were apples and oranges.

I think that SRV was nowhere near his pinnacle when he passed and that may have been a contributing factor in the two apparently not crossing paths. He was still largely on an upswing. I think his best albums were in his future, a future which did not happen. However, the 90's killed "classic rock" style music and replaced it with crap like grunge.

SRV would've been just fine during grunge. He would've just kept on doing his thing. Blues Rock never intersected with Grunge. He was on a completely different wavelength. But he was definitely in the discussion as one of the absolute greats. A real virtuoso. In my book, he's one of the kings like Eddie. My God, he could fuckin' play.

It still hurts that he's gone. He had just gotten clean and sober.

The blues has been a constant in popular music since the 50's.

SRV would have been just fine in the 90's, 00's, 10's, 20's. He might not be selling out Cowboy Stadium, but he'd be successful.

I have tons of Guitar mags from the 80's into the mid 90's I usually read or glance over one of them a week just to maybe read about guys I wasn't into back then. Funny thing is while SRV is loved back then, its not on the level that it is today. In fact you read reviews of the albums and some of them think a few of them are ho hum. Definitely praise with his playing but they did notice how it declined with him hitting the sauce. Ironic that the first guy who was supposed to be "the guy" was Robert Cray. He kind of got forgotten but he was supposed to be the one who saved the blues. The one who would bring balance to the Force (hey its May 4th)

When I bought my new car in October, it came with the SIRIUS trial. I got hooked on Deep Tracks, having listened to Earl Bailey in Philly. After a while, I got sick of the Bowie shit (I didn't mind Bowie, until recently. Now I can't stand him.), so I roamed SIRIUS. My current favorite is Bluesville. So far they do seem to play a lot of Joe Bonomassa, but man can they dig out some really old recordings. That stuff is timeless.

Not recalling where I read this, but SRV was tortured by coming up with new, fresh material to play. My memory is he spent ridiculous amounts of time in the studio just looking for inspiration or something new to record. Yes, you can argue the drugs may have greatly influenced this. But, playing new material did not come easy for him.

Ed, in contrast was one of the most prolific writers ever. After 80,81, he probably didn’t have to write anything new. His library of riffs, ideas, etc will take years and years to go through as we know. There was something otherworldly going through Ed’s consciousness. And a for a lot of that he was very much under the influence. Just didn’t seem to matter with Ed. (Except 2004!)

There's NO photo's of EVH & SRV together that I know of & believe me I looked I'm not oblivious & I'm guessing what You're referring to is the Sox Photo of Ed with Jeff Beck & Steve Lukather backstage at the SRV/ Jeff Beck show in 1990....

But- No photo of Ed taken with SRV...???

I am of the opinion that this is highly suspiscious.....

Yup. EVH just wasn't into Hendrix, and probably not into SRV either. Wasn't his cup of tea. When it came to Texas players, his man was always Billy Gibbons. He might have nicked some chicken pickin technique from Albert Lee, not sure. No SRV. I think also starting the late 70s, EVH was constantly on tour and wasn't hearing a lot of new stuff. I remember an older interview with Sammy when he was in the band, where he was surprised by the fact that Eddie knew none of the new hotshot guitar players of the 80s. I mean he knew Vai, who was a friend, and Satch. And maybe Yngwie. But that's it.
