“Can’t stop lovin’ you” on VHIII tour

I recently saw a list of songs on FB from the Newcastle, Australia show from ‘98. It wasn’t the set list, just a rough list of the songs played on the night. It had “Can’t stop lovin’ you” on there. I’ve never ever heard that this was attempted on the tour, but I could be wrong. Maybe they tried it once, and it didn’t work out. Did any aussies go to the Newcastle show? I went to Melbourne and Sydney.

But I can totally see why devoted Roth era fans would absolutely think it's dog shit.

It's a good song...for Michael Bolton.

Never liked it, but that is simply not my kind of song, nothing against Sam or being a Roth die hard. Could have been Led Zep releasing it and I still wouldn't like it.

I'm not a fan of a band writing a additional song when the album is basically done to specifically create a radio hit. It happens all the time and in this case, exactly what VH did (according to stories I've read). I also agree that it's a good song, just not a good VH song.

I went to the Newcastle show. It was a great show, was able to stand on the floor directly in front of Ed, 3 rows back. They definitely didn't play CSLY at this show, or at Sydney and Canberra.

As DD said, it's a good song for Michael Bolton or Jon Bon Blows. For Van Halen, even Van Hagar it's...

That said, Al does some nice subtle dynamics on it and the volume swell stuff Ed does on the solo is slick.

Watching that interview with him talking about how one day the album was called Uncle Tom's Cabin and the next, unbeknownst to him, it was titled Cherry Pie and then he was in Cherry Pie eating contests is a bit heartbreaking.

He got over it later, probably because the royalty checks from that song were what was putting food on his table, but yeah, that is one reason I respect the fuck out of Rush.

They were willing to get dropped from the label instead of changing their songs/albums.

Not to derail this riveting thread on CSLY...lol.... But I think there was some revisionist history in those interviews with Jani in the late 90s lamenting the Cherry Pie song. Earlier in 1990, he was loving the fame and the big hit. He also hooked up with Bobbie Brown.

I mean really, is it that far of a jump from DOWN BOYS to Cherry Pie?

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a good song. It was still a hit and a video/single in heavy rotation on MTV, so it is not like it didn't come out or was some deep cut.

Hell, in the height of grunge in 1992 I bought Dog Eat Dog from Warrant...lol...
