Default Advice on making side fret marker dots more visible (EVH Wolfgang STD)

A sharpie wonít screw up his guitar.

As DD said, it didnít sound like the OP wanted to change the dots. He just wanted to make them more visible without dropping $150 taking it to a tech. Sounded like he wanted DIY options, so thatís what he was given.

If he had said he wanted to replace the neck or frets, common sense would dictate that he should probably take it to a tech if he wasnít proficient in that sort of maintenance work.

Iíve never even considered changing the side dots on any of my guitars.

I can understand it, if you are playing live somewhere and it's a dark setting.

Never happened to me before, but my eyesight is starting to go shit, so I might need it once I can start playing in front of people again.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Oh yeah, I can totally get behind having glow-in-the-dark or LED side fret markers. I love the idea. It would be cool if there were side markers made of Lumibrite like Seiko uses in their proprietary watch lume. That would be the shit.

I try to practice so that I donít have to look at the fretboard, but Iím not that good to where I donít ever need to look at the fretboard. Ideally I would be able to be like Ray Charles, Pig Robbins or the current first call Nashville piano player Gordon Mote who just RIP with perfect pitch and of course are blind!

No such stipulation about the OP requesting do-it-yourself or low cost advice only.

Any advice as to how I can modify them, or boost the visibility. I know I'm getting older every day, but c'mon. I don't even wear glasses!

    Okay, Allan.

He should take it to a tech. That is your suggestion.

I love Allan, but he won't let anything go, it's part of his charm. Learn to love it and move on.

And Allan, this is NOT a dig.

Since this conversation about side fret markers has turned into a little bit more, I have a question about refretting since you brought it up, Brett.

I have a 1962 Gibson Les Paul Jr. (right before they changed the body style, it's an original SG type) I inherited from my father-in-law about 3 years ago. Ever since I got it, it's pretty much been my main player. The neck is perfect for me and the old PAF sounds awesome for being almost 60 years old! Anyhow, with everything being original except the bridge, a couple of the frets are starting to buzz. Normally with my other guitars I would use this sanding kit I have and have no problem fixing it, but I really don't want to experiment with this guitar. I do have a guy I trust to work on it, he actually brought it back to life, but I don't know if the whole neck should be refretted or would he just do a couple? Would doing that throw off the whole feel of the neck? I really like the way it plays right now and I don't want to change the whole thing? I have no experience in this area and would appreciate all your thoughts. Maybe I should start a new thread. You know what, now that I read the post again, I will start a new thread, sorry.

    I appreciate all the responses.

I am certainly a DIY guy who was heavily inspired by EVH's diy attitude. I've done everything but carve the body/neck or do a refret. I think EVH has to be the most DIY guitar guy there is... well, maybe that's why EVH liked Brian May so much.

Anyway, it's just wire and wood guys. I don't collect them, I play them. That being said I'm going to give it a go, and I'd like to think that Edward would give me a thumbs up for that.

Eddie also had his own techs doing almost all the major work on his guitars. He did enough on his own in the early days to know what he preferred, but he left the heavy lifting to other people for most of his career.

Did you actually feel the need to correct him by saying that Ed had guitar techs?....

The guy was just saying he's inspired by Ed's DIY spirit.
