Yeah, 1996 is the year for the band, that was just a fucking clusterfuck of mistakes.

You don't fire a guy you just had four straight #1 albums with.

If you do, and you successfully tease your fans about the beloved original frontman coming back, you follow through with it, you don't then pull a bait and switch to sell some Greatest Hits albums and hire Gary Cherone.

That being said, for me, it was 1988 and the release of OU812. Among my friend group, that album hit with a thud.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

Was it in 1984 with keyboard songs like Jump and I'll Wait?
Was it in 1986 with more keyboard songs like Why Can't This Be Love and Love Walks In?
Was it in in 1995 with the rapidly deteriorating relationship between Ed and Sam and the morose tone of songs like Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do), Not Enough and Feelin' on Balance?
Was it in the summer of 1996 with the firing of Sam, the tease of the possible return of Dave and the eventual hiring of Gary?
Was it in 1998 with the release of the much maligned and poorly received Van Halen III?
Was it in 2004 with the less than stellar 3 new songs and awkward tour with Sam?
Was it in 2007 with the return of Dave and Mike being replaced by Wolfgang?

Or, did Van Halen never really "jump the shark"?

Opinions differ. Even among "die-hards". There are many guys uploading Van Halen guitars covers/lessons on YouTube. One of them is Doug Steele. I believe he stated it numerous times that he kinda lost his interset in VH after Diver Down. His guitar covers are only up to Fair Warning too.

Doug: But you really can’t go wrong with those first four albums. Diver Down has great songs like Hang ’em High and Secrets, I’m not too fond of all the cover shit. 1984 Ed changed his tone quite a bit, and aside from the main staples on there, I started getting into heavier stuff. I’m one of those guys. A lot of people think that I’ve been into Van Halen the whole time; not true I say!! From 88 to 2003 I didn’t listen to Van Halen at all.(...) From 88 to 2003 I didn’t listen to Van Halen at all.

IMO DD was really kinda all over the place: disco (DITS), Country (Hapy Trails), Jazz/Swing (BBB), Pseudo-Flamenco (Little Guitars), or Blues (The Full Bug). But I still like it. My younger son likes "Happy Trails". It's his favorite VH song by far .

Speaking of covers, this guy kinda sounds and looks like young Eddie:

Love the use of Boss DD-3 (?) as a poor man's Echoplex.

Doug Steele referred to Van Hagar as "jock rock". It was not a compliment.

Wait! You mean he didn't enjoy those lyrics:

Now baby, let me fill you up inside (Up inside)
Spread your wings and (Open wide) open wide
So hot! So hot! So hot

Still, he never touched anything off of DD or 1984 on Youtube. So, we can assume that VH "jumped the shark" in 1982 with Diver Down for him.

Default When did Van Halen "jump the shark"?

Samís lyrics were always very literal.

Every single song about sex, you knew it was about sex by about the third word of the first verse.

Iím not a huge fan of those lyrical stylings either.

No, not every single song was about sex. Many were, many weren't.

I think you misread my post. What I meant was that every single song about sex, was fairly obvious.

The minute they hired Gary instead of Dave, was it for me. October 26, 2004 was a close second when I saw the train wreck of the 2004 tour with my naked, steaming eyes. 2007 - 2015 made up for that a lot in my mind tho. ADKOT was an absolute gift to us hard-core fans after all we had experienced.

I guess Sammy also never really gave much though to them too Still, the guy has pipes.
That said, the intro riff is sick: bold, funny yet genius. Classic Eddie.
Plus I am in better situation 'cause English is not my first language. So I usually miss lyrical gems like that.

I'll say 1996. The most up and down fucked up single year in VH land. To the general public, they were never looked at the same on a large level. 2004 made it much worse and it got much darker. 2006-15 redeemed much of that for me and a lot of us on here, but it just wasn't enough (the Mike bungle)
I am forever thankful to Wolf for the small resurrection and small repair to their legacy however.

It's not really a battle, just like who's the better singer isn't really a battle.
