    1996

    1. Sam fired
    2. Dave back
    3. Dave fired
    4. Gary hired

A band led by 12 year olds wouldn't have fucked things up as bad as VH did.

Love him, but Ed needed a manager to tell him...

"Look. I'm not sure what's going through your fucking head right now....Ed, put the cello down for a second.....Look, this is what's happened so far this year, Ed..... things fell apart with Sammy...No problem, I know things were falling apart and you weren't happy with Hagar.....but you got Dave back for two new songs that are tits and you guys just tore the fucking house down at the MTV Awards...now I'm hearing you've been auditioning new lead singers this entire time and you offered the job to Mitch Malloy???....So you dont want to move ahead with Dave when he's out there talking like he's back in the band?....This is fucking ridiculous, Ed. Let's have Dave come in here. Have a pow wow and figure this shit out. Because nobody's going to give a shit about VH with Mitch Malarkey. I'm sorry Ed, but this is fact. Let's try to work things out with Dave. I'll call Ted. We'll all have dinner and we'll squash this childish beef. Alright...sorry for interrupting. Cello sounds great, babe.

1996, and they never recovered in my opinion.
    SOME VH LINKS CLASSICS

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.
Ok I think that covers everything." Ziggysmalls

"I sense that some of our newer passengers may be nervous due to the sudden turbulence. Please be seated, this is simply a normal part of the periodic ride.
I didn't say we'll get to the destination, but until Alex comes out a says what a complete waste of carbon DLR is, we're still climbing, so strap yourselves in.
Those of you who have been on this ride before, the hottie in the mini will be around shortly with your drinks......." Red

Honestly, as someone who was born too late to really enjoy this band, itís been a constant disappointment my whole life. The bands been compromised in some shape or way since 86, 96 was the one time they could have redeemed themselves but they blew it. Iím glad I got to see them in 2007 but you could imagine wanting to see the whole band once, together, would have been nice. Maybe have mike on 07 then kick him off after so we could have all seen it once again even if they were older. But whatever, Edís gone and itís all over.

But redeemed themselves with some really good, fun tours, and a great album in ADKOT to cap their career. Wouldve liked more, but they have more quality releases than the vast majority of bands.

Yup, I think that VH jumped over a school of sharks. Or invented a new sport, steeple shark - or shark hurdles. It's a miracle that with so many self-inflicted sharks, we still have tons of great records from them.

Going to play devil's advocate here because why not? They jumped the shark when they started to become a corporation. Probably around the end of 1984 and it was the brand Van Halen instead of the band Van Halen. Has nothing to do with Dave or Sam. Just that they were too huge for their egos.

The engine started though when they started to sleep on silk sheets and lost that band mentality. The Fonz was getting closer to the ramp when Eddie stopped wanting to be a guitar hero. You listen to those old bootlegs and it was a band on fire set to dominate the world. It was them vs the world. They kind of got a bit of it back when Sammy did 5150 but then they simply rested on their laurels.

1996 was basically when Fonz landed.

Intelligent post. When Ed started doing interviews in all the womenís magazines with Valerie and doing interviews with her on Entertainment Tonight the band certainly lost a step. Then at the same time Al and Ed didnít want to tour anymore and just do four festival shows a year. Roth wanted to basically be on the road full time making hay while the sun shined. Was a big reason why he had the discussion with Ed and ultimately left. Or told them to sort their shit out and regroup in a year but the brothers werenít having it.

... Van Halen jumped WITH the shark onstage during the first world tour, and in their first few music videos. Other than that, this discussion is moot.

The morning after the release I was walking the halls before school and one of my friends named Mike, he was a guitarist that gave me guitar lessons saw me coming and yelled "Helloooo Baaaby" Good times...

I'm sorry wombatt, I get too nostaglic. I just love those early years of being a Van Halen fan.
