Can you elaborate on this a little? Noel Monk trashes their performance at the US Festival in his book. I checked out some snippets and Dave's definitely got the wasted look in his eyes and mangles lyrics, but would be curious if there are any particularly trainwrecky songs or blocks of time to check out.

It's public knowledge that Dave was coked out of his mind that day.

I can, I bought a bootleg of the VH at the US Festival live about 20 years ago. I wanted to cry watching it! Dave forgets lyrics in almost every song, because he is so drunk & high! He even says in a few songs "I forgot the words!"

Van Halen was the headliner for the US Festival & they were paid a million dollars. I heard there is a tape where they overdub the missing lyrics. But I got the raw version.
Right Now you're reading my post!

Sorry, I am more into guitar-driven stuff
I am also into more guitar-driven stuff, but I think Don't Tell me contains one of EVH's most pedestrian and boring guitar riffs. I have never cared for that song. It was Van Halen's attempt at grunge and it missed the mark, at least in my book.

I am glad we figured it out. I don't mind DTM (WLCD) and I don't mind Grunge. I mean, after the apex of hair metal in the late 80's (Poison, Bon Jovi, Europe, etc.) it was a welcomed change...and I will take Soundgarden, Temple of The Dog or Pearl Jam over Diana Ross, Village People, Modern Talking, or Boney M anytime, anyday.

Yes, the mighty Al was right on this one. DITS is the bottom of the barrel of VH and it isn't even VH, it's a fokkin' cover. So, even though I am not crazy about DTM it just blows DITS out of the water. No contest. I get that on Diver Down VH wanted to show they can play Blues, Flamenco, Pop, hell, I get that they wanted to try some Country, and I can understand that they wanted to try this R&B/motown/disco thing, but this song is a little too much for me. For me it is not VH, just like for Al. So I kinda understand the Doug Steele approach (basically VH "jumped the shark" in 1982 with Diver Down for him). I mean I don't agree with him cause I like all VH records but I respect his stance.

As for those R&B/pop VH covers, go for You're No Good. Now that's a song that VH made their own.

As for Don't Tell Me..., the two solos were actually "not too shabby", don't ya think so?

DTMWLCD is bottom half of Balance for me, not sure why they had that as the lead single. I think this was VH trend chasing, and while I love Sam's voice, his straining on this one (and I know it is on purpose) is not a good performance.

For me. Others mileage will vary.

I pretty much discovered drums and Van Halen all in the summer of 1982 when I was 11. My parents aren't big music people but I have an older brother that was starting to bring records home. I also saw a local band of kids playing in a park that summer and it made me want to play drums. When my brother brought home Diver Down, I was transfixed by the pictures on the back, especially Alex sitting behind his massive four bass drum Ludwig set wearing shades with a big grin on his face. For an 11 year old that was magical and I loved everything on all the albums VH did once I started digging in. I still love Diver Down but some of the songs (especially Pretty Woman) just kind of bore me a little after hearing it so many times. I would still take any of those songs over a lot of other stuff.

One thing I absolutely love about DD is how it shows the diversity and incredible musicianship those guys had. They really sound authentic playing old time jazz on BBB and though I was taking lessons from a great teacher that played brushes really well, it made it really hip hearing Alex do it. Alex swings his ass off too. Honestly my favorite VH tunes tend to be ones where Mike's background vocals are very prominent. That's not always the case but I love tunes like DTNA, HAIL, Feel Your Love Tonight, Girl Gone Bad, Summer Nights, The Dream is Over, etc. They are all great to me but Mike's voice just makes them all that much better to me.

As for Diver Down, I absolutely love Little Guitars, Secrets and the Full Bug. Those are some great original songs.

Still WAY better than DITS. Hell, even Strung Out is better.

His vocals are close enough to rock n roll. No biggie. I would like to be able to give such a bad vocal performance.

I prefer original compositions for artistic merit, but for listening, I'll take DITS over DTMWLCD.

And that is not an endorsement of DITS, simply not a fan of DTMWLCD.

More power to ya! However, I prefer hard rock (even Grunge-influenced) over Motown /Disco 'cause....

And one more time: The DITS single should be buried deep below the Nevada desert in that old salt mine they're using to store nuke waste for the next 10.000 years, where no one might accidentally find it and inflict it upon their unsuspecting ears. Anyone who thinks DITS (no matter original version or one of countless covers) is "such a classic tune" should be turned over to the Taliban, stoned to death and buried in an unmarked grave. ;D

You REALLY need to twist Coulda's arm on this, Marcin!

He's reluctant to make lists otherwise.
