You think that's one of the reasons one of the CVH tunes they played with Sammy was You Really Got Me?

Honestly, yes, I think at the time anything they could do to put less money in DLR's pocket they would do. That grudge was held for a long time.

Look at how they didn't include ANY Sam material on their own website for sale after 2004.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    You understood it correctly.

Did a little research (which is what I should have done earlier). Appears as though the venue would be on the hook for acquiring/paying for the appropriate blanket licenses and from there organizations like ASCAP would pay out the royalties.

The band wouldnít even have felt it if they had played additional Roth tunes.

If that was truly the reason they didnít, thatís pretty petty. I guess that pettiness subsided come the III Tour.

I know that Leffler was involved in that as well in making sure the right people were getting paid royalties.

And yes, I do think Van Halen was that petty. As I said, they've left any product with Sam's name on it off their shelves for over fifteen years.

That's the very definition of petty.

If the band didn’t have to pay Roth to perform songs he co wrote, then that’s even less of a reason for Sam to not sing those songs.

I’m not going to harp on it though; what’s done is done. So many lost opportunities.

The band needed those older songs to draw interest in the 3 tour.

Fans werenít really there to hear the new Van Halen 3 songs with Gary.

Telling Ed and Alex to change the name of the band is like telling Bon Jovi to change the name of his band to Anchovy. It's their birth right to have that band name same with Bon Jovi.

It's even worse since Van Halen actually is their birth name.

The money going to Roth is money that ISN'T going to Van Halen. The venue takes it out of the gross revenues from the concert as part of calculating VH's share.

Exactly.....One moment we pontificate how the VH brothers didn't understand the business side of the music business and in the next moment we pontificate how they were such pricks for maximizing the revenue stream from past songwriting and performance royalties.

As if any of us wouldn't do exactly the same thing if we were in their position.

One of Jon Bon Jovi's friends actually suggested the band name to follow the lead of Van Halen. Could she sue when any band member leaves?

If I suggest that my friend should name his store "Larry's Restaurant" could I sue if he gets a new chef?

It's silly but I think Dave was just trying to prove a point and not actually try to litigate the issue.

How fuckin' ridiculous! It's their last name!
If it was something else I could see Ed and Al maybe thinking about it. Given their frame of mind at the time.

I think Dave was just reminding them where that name came from. I doubt he had any plans of following thru.

I gotta say, Ed was a bigger man than I am. I mighta talked to Dave again but I woulda never got back together with him after that.

I think the point Dave was making was that while it was Ed and Alís last name the band Van Halen was Dave, Ed, Al and Mike. It wasnít Ed and Alís band.

Personally, I see the merit behind Daveís line of thinking at the time but itís really dependent on if he was fired or if he quit.

That could be, as well. But when your last names are the name...I don't see a win there.
Now, if it was Mammoth, or something....there's more of a chance. Lol.
