Yep. They really didn't need to do many Roth tunes when Sammy came into the band. They had their new stuff and his material. Add in 2-4 Roth tunes, and that's a show. And as they produced more and more new material, less reason to play the older stuff.

And frankly, if they HAD done a lot of deeper track Roth songs....then the Roth-only fans would be saying "Nobody wants to hear Sammy singing Dave songs".

So they really couldn't win with that one.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Maybe at first, but I think if Sam had chosen some Roth era songs that were deep cuts that he could have really belted out, fans would have loved it. There are always going to be extreme portions of the fan horseshoe that don't like what one of the singer's does, not matter how great it is.

Look how much recognition people give Gary for the III tour, and no one outside of the auditory disabled liked that album.

For example, something like I'm the One or On Fire, Sam would have killed on those live. Or hell, one of the hits that got totally ignored, Dance the Night Away.

I get why he didn't, he wanted to play stuff that he wrote. Totally understand it, but I also think he could have been a little more flexible as he was the new guy.

But hey, it doesn't really matter, it is what it is, what's done is done.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Another cheap shot at the VH3 album, it's your opinion of course.

On the "3" tour yes most people where there to hear the Van Halen classics but Gary did an admirable job with the material.

I enjoyed the 3 tour. Got to hear some old Roth classics along with some good Hagar tunes. Plus, the songs from the 3 album sounded so much better live.

The 3 songs were great live. Ed jammed on One I Want and Fire in the Hole sounded even better than the record.

Plus 3 had a really cool rare release in a tin complete with photos and a Van Halen guitar pick:

That's just ego gone crazy. As a comparison, when Gary joined they didn't play any Extreme songs with VH. And the hit songs that Gary brought to the band were WAY bigger than anything Sammy had pre VH or post VH (and honestly one of them was bigger than anything he had in VH).

They didn’t play “More Than Words”?

Even though it is Alex and Edward’s last name, I never felt the band was simply them. All those album covers - Dave, Ed, Al & Mike featured equally (well, I have never counted how many of each member of the band features in the picture on the Diver Down inner sleeve). They were a band, one that just happened to be named Van Halen

No, they didn’t play More Than Words. Ed asked Gary what Extreme songs he wanted to play and Gary said whoa, I joined Van Halen, you guys didn’t join Extreme.

    Class act is Gary.

    Smart too

Would rather hear that than "How Many Say I".

I would have clubbed them for it, I'll fully admit it, but yeah, I'd rather they do that than roll out the baby grand.

VH the band was a business entity regardless of it being Ed and Al's last name. There are other Van Halen's in the world as well, not entitled to the entity. The question was where did the entity remain. Some might say since Roth did more Van Halen songs in his shows that he was entitled to the entity.

I did wish for the name to change to Van Hagar since it was such different music - that said... it's all good.... and hey Brett - hope you are well!
