Yep, VH opened for The Stones in 1978 and also played two shows with them to cap off the Fair Warning Tour in 1981...

Here is the VH Setlist for the '78 show. Over 80,000 attended. For many years it was the largest indoor concert crowd ever. Doobie Brothers also opened.

I still think diver down has the best album liner of all the albums:

That's what I thought. Opening act and they are doing 16 songs, plus a drum solo AND a bass solo? Obviously you are not going to be able to have Van Halen on a stage without a guitar solo but a bass solo? The Stones weren't intimidated.

I have the large print copy of the back of the Diver Down album picture mentioned earlier here. It's available on Jeff's VHND site. One thing I noticed, and forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but after closer inspection I think this picture is reversed. I have tried to read the scoreboard and some of the banners hanging and I think the negative was flipped. Also, Mike is on stage left and Eddie closer to stage right, which I don't think happened, maybe at all, even for bows. Alex would come down and head next to his brother. The one real giveaway clue however is Eddies guitar pedal box is stage right as well under his mic stand. Did Eddie ever play from stage right? Not a huge deal, it still is probably my favorite VH print as it captures what it felt like to see them live. Maybe this can be fact #17?

i would say you are correct. If you look at photo #1 here (the overhead shot), the sound tent would be on the band's left when they are facing the audience, yet in the back cover photo, it's on the right (photo #4)

I believe the only time Ed ever setup on that side of the stage was Buenos Aires, Argentina 1983.
