Kind of the same in 1996 with Sam.

If they could have all gotten in the same room (sober) and talked it out, its most likely that they didn't break up.
IMO, Dave quit in 1985 and Sammy was fired in 1996. Terrible move by Dave in 1985 and a terrible move by Ed and Al in 1996.

Dave didn't quit in 1985. Not going to go all through this again, but Dave didn't quit.

LOL! Well I just watched a new Billy Sheehan interview. He said Dave told him, "I quit Van Halen and i'm starting a band" It sounds like Dave quit to me.

More than likely just Dave trying to save face in the situation and appear to be stronger. Daveís never really ever played the victim nor do I think he likes being viewed as one.

I, like DD, donít think he was fired nor do I think he outright quit.

I think Ed/Al and Daveís relationship just dissolved.

So, are you saying that Dave thought he was just taking a temporary hiatus from Van Halen in 1985? That doesn't seem to be what Ed and Al thought.

LOL. We knew with the hundreds of interviews and statements since Dave rejoining he had regret.

I just hope that, in the future, Sam will focus on the good and the journalists and show hosts won't turn these things into ten minutes of that time Ed did you wrong. That stuff is pointless now.

It's time to celebrate the great tunes and good times VH left us with. Not rehashing old drama.

Some random points on this one.

To the poster that said VH were a non-entity in Europe with Sammy, that's spot on.

Europe was very pro-Dave and he was still able to sell out theatres as late as 2004 as a solo artist.

I was at the Bon Jovi Wembley gig and it was depressing. 80,000 people waiting for Jon and no-one giving a toss who VH were until they played Jump. Sammy even said 'Oh now you're awake' after finishing the song, which seemed like he had some butthurt about it.

Dave wrote in CFTH that he saw the end of the road coming for his solo career on the ALAE tour. He says that he saw the audience changing and that he 'wasn't firing on all pistons' on that album. I took that to mean that he was losing audience AND interest.

Noel Monk writes that male pattern baldness really robbed Dave of being 'Diamond Dave' the all action frontman. By ALEA you can see he's brushing his hair to the side and how far he's receding. He started to look old on that tour.

With regard to all the stats about the album sales and solo career, my meticulous and statistically derived opinion is that Dave is better than Sam.

    I miss Eddie.

The how and why no longer matter... the simple facts are 4 adult men... Ed, Al, Dave, Sam... all failed to maintain productive personal and business relationships that were quite lucrative to each other and based on sentiment expressed, meaningful to each personally to a varying degree.

They each own a fair share in those failures... what they do with any of that is up to them for their remaining time on Earth.

Just to clarify: Yes Sammy's album Standing Hampton was certified Gold in 1993.
You can check that on the RIAA site.
It could be that the rights holders didn't bother to get it recertified.

It is a bit pointless to compare their solo output.
Sammy has put out roughly triple in one form or other (chickenfoot warboritas etc.) what Dave has.

Dave certainly charted world wide, so that would be a major difference.
If Dave had managed to keep the Eat em and Smile band togehter who knows what this discussion would have been.

Guys, lets be done comparing DLR and Sam's solo careers. It accomplishes nothing, everyone already has their mind made up, and this has been done on here a hundred times already.

The best part of Sam and Dave's careers where when they were each in Van Halen respectively, and it isn't even close, let's close that part of the conversation with that, as we can all agree on it.

So, his critics have long said airing that laundry was unseemly and unnecessary and he shouldn't have done it, that Sammy did it wrong.

He admits to this, now, says he did it the wrong way, and he very much regrets it. He admitted that as part of a 53-minute podcast. Print outlets take that sliver of the podcast and run clickbait stories.

Sammy's critics say he is still doing it wrong and should STFU.

Otherwise known as a day that ends with "y" on this website.
