I just checked and confirmed.... yes, you are correct.

Yeah Sammy's draw up here isn't what it is down in the States.

It really does speak to what a brand VH was up here. They played a stadium up here in 85 and Sammy was a non-entity. I'd argue Gary was more well known here when he joined than Sammy was when he joined (actually he certainly was). The amazing thing is after they played the Blue Jays stadium in 85 they didn't play here in 88 which was just head-scratching and could have really burned the market for them. But the brand was strong enough to survive that decision. I'm not sure where Toronto was a VH market but it's certainly in the top 10, and might be in the top 5.

Sammy has a nice tight fan base up here, he could play the casino every couple of years for the next 20 years and do well with it.

Pretty sure they played Exhibition Stadium in 1986.

I'm not sure if they could have, at least not to the size of venues they did on this side of the ocean. I think they had their 50 or so markets that they knew they'd do well in and that was good enough for them. Why spend the money you need to spend playing the UK when you can just add 10 dates in secondary US markets and get a similar crowd. They weren't in it to take over the world anymore.

That was pretty much my point but I guess I didnít express it very well.

I think with David they had more international appeal and they could have done what Jon did and focussed more on the world during the early 90s and less on America. When Sam joined, VH became an America only band with a few dates in Canada mixed in (hell they didn't even play Canada in 88 - which was fucking ridiculous).
I have no doubt they'd have made it past grunge with Dave. More so, IMO, but obviously no way to prove that. Just that Dave and Ed really were THAT good as a songwriting team. Sam and Ed were more "typical" of the time period, which is one reason that stuff isn't as timeless and doesn't generally enjoy the same rep as the six pack.

I know I've read Alex specifically did not like traveling abroad. Even more so after he married Stine and they had Malcolm.

It doesn’t matter where they walked or what they walked into. For better or worse, they walked.

Van Halen easily could have survived grunge if Dave was still in the band.

Aerosmith sold 7 million copies of Get a Grip, which was released in 93 in the peak of grunge. This was helped by a few music videos that got a lot of airplay on MTV with Alicia Silverstone starring in one or two.

The cream will always rise and stay at the top (best bands). Van Halen survived grunge with Hagar because they were a great band and were not part of the hair metal scene.

Grunge didnít even survive the movement. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains are about it.

I still think AIC is the best band from that era, in large part to Jerry Cantrellís guitar playing and their overall quality of songs.

Maybe but we will never know. All I know is the shows I went to up to 1995 where all sold out and screaming fans all the way back to the parking lots.

i have no problem with Sam expressing how he felt in his book - as long as it was truthful. Some folks earlier in this thread said Dave didn't do the same, but he certainly did have some parts in his book that weren't flattering to Edward - something like "Edward Van Halen without a guitar in his hands is a crappy human being" Bet he wishes he could redact that. Of course, in Dave's case it was on the heels of the '96 letdown but still it was kind of harsh. And as Bourne clarified earlier - Crazy From The Heat was an EP, so that is more akin to having a hit single than a hit album I think. Or somewhere in between at least. But it's hard to compare their solo careers as Sam had one before Van Halen and I'm not sure being the former singer for Montrose helped him nearly as much as Dave being the former singer for Van Halen. It's all part of the Van Halen story, and the shots taken are probably no different than Paul and John's sniping in the '70s. Just wish the good stuff could've lasted longer.
