Totally false. Dave had three solo platinum albums in a row. Sam never did. This misconception has to end.

And Sam knew what he was getting into. A huge band with a two dysfunctional alcoholic leaders. He feathered his nest perfectly and was able to control Ed and Al totally for a decade. Itís no coincidence that Ed fell out with Sam at exactly the same time he decided to quit the booze. He was a VERY shrewd businessman long before he ever got involved in the liquor business. Remember he had a side business doing airfares for rock bands before he even joined the band, itís in his book. The whole easy-going drunk uncle/stoner schtick is exactly that. He was always five steps ahead of everyone in VH because his manager came along for the ride, the brothers were clueless to the business stuff and easy to control and Mike didnít even have a vote.

From the oft-quoted takedown of Samís book :

Page 173: "The fans went against Roth. He died a quick death as a solo artist." [When he went solo in 1985]

I would say that most current VH fans are under the impression that Hagar's solo career has been more successful than Roth's. However, if you want to measure the success with ALBUM SALES, Roth's solo career has actually been more successful than Hagar's! Roth's first 3 albums went Platinum (Crazy From The Heat in '85, Eat 'EM And Smile in '86, and Skyscraper in '87). Hagar, however, never had could match that success - he never had 3 consecutive Platinum solo albums... just 3 consecutive GOLD albums, and then later in 1987 released another one that only went gold, with the help of Eddie playing bass. Hagar's solo career simply was never as big as Roth's was in the '80's. Roth was consistently platinum, while Hagar was consistently gold.

And youíre not even right, Standing Hampton was gold when he joined VH. It went platinum in April 1992.

VOA was platinum when he joined VH. That was the only one.

Roth has a bigger solo career.

Sammy was a big artist in part of America but he was a regional rock star. He was a complete unknown up here. We discussed VH opening for Bon Jovi in Europe, part of that was due to Sammy. They were a non-entity in Europe once Dave left, like a complete non-story. David was the star of that band in Europe, much more than Eddie because his over-the-top personality broke the language barrier.

How many tunes did Dave write for that first "solo" album, dummy? And that was the album that was released literally right after he left the biggest band in the World right?

Lol. You changing the rules now and asking how many songs Roth wrote for that album doesnít make you correct. Facts are facts. Now sit down, WALDO.

And you saying that Rothís first album going platinum was only because he was just out of VH (which is incorrect but weíll run with it) then why did Samís 87 album when he was STILL IN Van Halen only go Gold? And that even had Eddie on bass, so it was literally half of Van Halen! Skyscraper sold twice what I Never Said Goodbye did, both in 1987. So not a very good observation if youíre trying to suggest Sam was more popular than Roth was. Again, numbers donít lie. It is what it is.

I was under the impression he was booted shortly after NYE 84 going into 85. But nonetheless, Mitch Malloy could have left VH in 1985 come out with a solo album and had it go platinum.
