Kevin Dugan is the only roadie/tech for a big rock band I ever knew. I always yell Dugie when I see him on stage and he waves. He used to post on here.

Good stuff there! I always find it kinda awkward when interviewers directly bring up rumors to pump for information, but in this case I thought it went over well. A lot of anecdotes I hadn't heard before. And he was really fired up about squashing the Ed-wants-to-be-in-KISS story, ha!

It seems the crowd always goes wild when Kevin comes out on stage to do something before the show. Everybody knows who he is. That's when you know shit's going to get real.

I think that Ed made an off handed comment at some point, and that rumor just got a life of its own that seemed to never go away.

Gene has confirmed that Ed asked/wanted to join Kiss. Gene told him no because he would just be another guitar player in KISS whereas VH was his.

I thought the beach ball comment made sense. Getting your mic stand knocked over is a pain in the ass.

I found the following quote very interesting in Kevin's interview:

"His solo would start out on a bass synthesizer. At the beginning of 1984, the album, that's the beginning of Michael's solo. We had written that and worked it out on a Roland Bass Synthesizer. Edward liked it so much that he made it the intro to the 1984 album."

I've never heard that before? Was this really written by Mike? I remember reading in a Guitar World interview where I thought that '1984' was originally like a 45 minute noodling session by Ed and Don Landee trimmed it down to just the song you hear to open the album

Dugan is only talking about the very first few seconds of 1984. Go listen to Mike's solo at the US Festival and you will hear it.

The coolest (and saddest) story in that interview is that Rory Gallagher was going to meet Ed and possibly play guitar with him in 1995 while VH was in Europe, but then Rory passed away on June 14, 1995. Rory is a beast of a player, who I think should have been as big as SRV, although he never achieved that level of commercial success and fame in the United States obviously. The thought of he and Ed playing together makes me smile.

It's a "synth" solo, with a bass guitar using a pedal by Mike and Ed on keys.

Yeah, but the first few seconds of 1984 is the part that Mike had been using for his bass solo on the DD tour.
