Of course he already did blow a save this year, no fucking surprise.
playoff ERA - 2.40. In the only bad postseason he's ever had, you guys won the World Series.

I think Hack would give the best insight we could possibly get on the site of how difficult that is to do for a professional player.
No player in his right mind changes his swing to take into account the shift. The question is more - can a guy bunt occasionally to make it go away. Granted, the list of guy major impacts is rather small but those guys (the Jay Bruces of the world) might want to learn to bunt so they can add 30 points to their BA.

I donít think thereís any problem with a power guy laying down the occasional bunt sure. But I donít know if itís going to change anything with how he is played defensively. A guy would have to do a lot more than just a couple bunt hits to get the shift to go away for him. I think it would take a lot of proven results legitimately going the other way before that would happen. And I think trying to change the playerís habits, certainly older players, seems very unrealistic. A guy thatís been pulling the ball his entire career is isnít going to be able to change much about his swing at age 35. And he wonít want to either. But yeah if he is interested in raising his batting average a bit, I guess he could throw down some bunts if he really wanted to. I think trying to convince a Jay Bruce to raise his batting average a few points by bunting instead of launching the ball 450 feet is a tough sell.

End of the day, guys like him who won't adjust will play themselves out of full-time at-bats and the league. I don't care what kind of power you have, if you end up hitting .200 because everything on the ground is an auto out you won't have a great career.

I didn't play at any elite level, just a year in college very poorly.

But I played in the 80's, so we still did hit and runs, run and hits, sac bunts, hitting behind the runner, etc.

So, if someone put that kind of shift on, most batters in that era at the collegiate level would say "thank you very much". But, I think as Brett said, most hitters except for the handful of power guys were using the whole field anyway and wouldn't have a shift used against them in the first place.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

It won't change anything for the power guys if they laid down an occasional bunt. Like I said, teams would be fine with giving up a single to the big guys and setting up a potential DP, rather than a HR. Those hitters are stuck with the shift.

The Matt Carpenters of the world have more of a willingness and ability, apparently, to successfully bunt or even slap the ball the other way. But, honestly, I don't think the shift will go away for him either. Like you said, the frequency of such adjustments on his part are not happening enough for such returns to 'normalcy' in defensive alignment.

Speaking of the 1980s.... Have you guys seen what Ramůn Laureano in Oakland is doing right now? 8 Stolen Bases in 10 games. That is more then most entire teams have...lol.. Super aggressive.

    Rangers, 12
    Rockies, 9
    Ramon Laureano, 8
    Marlins, 8
    Phillies, 8
    Cubs, 8

That pace over a year, that is a 100 SB season. Though I am sure catchers will start to catch on when Laureano gets on base going forward. While he is fast, he doesn't have elite speed.

The jump is almost as important when stealing bases anyway. With the lead you take plus the slide, it really amounts to a 20 yd dash, the jump and how well you go into your slide are real important as well.

Stat geeks will tell you that it's:

    Top speed
    Jump
    When you start to decelerate
    Speed at the bag
    Lead

This is taking the pitcher and catcher out of it, and we all know you actually steal on the pitcher. Combine a pitcher with an elite time to home plate and an elite catcher behind the plate, it's almost impossible to steal a base.

I think that is one thing we are forgetting in the modern MLB (at least I am), that most pitchers are much quicker to the plate now in comparison to 20-30 years ago.
