Iíd bet MLB would rather have an NLCS of Dodgers vs Giants or Dodgers vs Cardinals.

We could get a rematch of the last two years.

Dodgers vs Braves Dodgers vs Brewers

    Boring

Nor should they. What would be the point of divisions?

Unfortunately when you're in the 22nd largest media market in country, revenues won't match up to what the Dodgers get from attendance and media. The Cardinals ownership is pretty honest about the fact that the only reason they are able to spend at the level they are is because of the support the fans give the team. If fans stop showing up, the team would have to slash payroll considerably.

The Dodgers are spending about 75 million more than the Cardinals this year on payroll--that's a huge gap they can't just buck up and spend to. The Cardinals are usually around 10th in payroll in the league which allows them to stay competitive year after year, but they a very small margin for error. When they make a signing for a free agent that doesn't end up working out (i.e. Dexter Fowler), it can have a cascading effect on building the roster. The Cardinals already aren't able to go after the top guys in free agency simply because of the cost, so they have to hit on those 2nd tier free agents to be successful, or they need to trade for guys that are willing to stay here long term for reasonable contracts. They also need to be wise with their extensions. Right now Matt Carpenter is an albatross. He would have been DFA'd two years ago if he was a Dodger or Yankee, but the Cardinals have to hope and pray they can squeeze some production out of him until his contract runs out.

I consider this to be the golden age of Cardinals baseball. Yes, we've had teams that have won more WS at times in the past, but we haven't been out of contention more than a couple weeks in total in the last 20 years. We're accustomed to being competitive and there's definitely an undercurrent of angst in the fan base that not only expects it but wants even more. Every year they don't win the World Series they want the ownership to go out and spend $40 million to "guarantee" a WS. As we all know it doesn't work like that (just ask the Dodgers). The reality is if they blow their wad on one year they would have to nuke the team and rebuild like the rest of the division does every 7 or so years. I don't want to go through that as a fan and neither does the ownership.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Not sure how SF has an easier schedule. Milwaukee should clinch by then and may be resting some guys. And according to some, Milwaukee is playing "trashy" right now. lol And Colorado is better than Arizona.
Then again, LA will be facing a SD that may still be hanging on by a thread. SF will probably be playing a SD team that's been eliminated.

Division is still up for grabs.

Speaking of divisions up for grabs, Philly has closed in on Atlanta in the NL East (-2). I know those are two "trashy" teams, but at least it's making the games interesting. They go head-to-head next week.

somehow the team tied for the 4th best record in the Major Leagues is "trashy"? Sure they've lost five in a row, but be serious.

And St. Louis just does a great job out there - they don't need to change a thing.

The only reason Cardinals have been this good for the last 20 years is they went to 3 divisions.

They got destroyed in the old NL east.

If the Brewers donít beat the Mets 3 games they could literally be in trouble .

They got the Cardinals then the Dodgers after that. Two teams that MUST WIN

not really. sure they were a little lean in the '70s but they still had 3 second place finishes. In the '80s they had 3 first place finishes (not counting 1981), all three of which ended in the World Series, of which they won 1. Their record in the 25 years since divisional play started up to 1993 was 2036-1946 (and six ties), a .511 winning percentage - about equal to an 83-79 record. Since the three divisions started in 1994, 11 first place finishes, 4 world series appearances, of which they won 2. 2359-1994 (and two ties) in 28 years through yesterday, a .542 winning percentage - about the equivalent of an 88-74 season. So sure - a few more first places and about 5 wins more per year, but only 1 more World Series appearance (which they won), which is what really matters.

13 in a row. Sosa probably broke his hand on a hit by pitch which is a huge blow. Goldschmidt, Arenado, and O'Neill all with 30 HRs. That's the first time the Cardinals have had that since Pujols, Edmonds, and Rolen in 2004 I think.

There's no doubt they wouldn't have made the playoffs some of these years without the Wild Card and three divisions, but hey, they are just playing by the rules the commissioner put into place.

To echo your sentiment about their success, even during the lean years in the 70's and early 90's they were never outright terrible. They haven't had the worst record in the National league in 103 years.

No, I think Cardinal fans are lucky. Even when they have down times you never get to feel as if it’s going to last a long time.

    Default MLB 2021

The Dodgers are so ripe to be beaten in this wild card game by the Cardinals. First of all the Cardinals always seem to beat the Dodgers when it matters. Actually they always do. And now a team that was basically average at best 90% of the season, gets on a hot run now can eliminate a team thatís been dominant the entire season in one game. Iím gonna keep saying it because itís really fucking annoying. A few weeks ago the Cardinals were barely at .500. And itís not like the Cardinals have gained that much ground on either the Dodgers or the Giants. They still could finish 16 or 17 games behind either of them even with this gigantic winning streak.

But this is what baseball wants. They have created an interest, whereas if there was only one wild card, there would be very little interest in anything going on in the National League right now. And honestly right now the playoff teams are pretty much set. It would take a miracle for anyone to catch the Cardinals.
