    Rockies: 11 (twice)
    Most recent: June 4-14, 2009
Colorado’s more famous 11-game win streak occurred two years prior in 2007, when the Rockies got white-hot in September to force a Game 163 tiebreaker with the Padres (which they won) before sweeping through the NLDS and NLCS in what became affectionately known in Denver as “Rocktober.” The Red Sox finally cooled the Rockies off with a four-game sweep in the World Series.

    I do remember this, though.

    Athletics: 20
    Aug. 13 - Sept. 4, 2002
If you’ve seen the movie version of “Moneyball,” then you can probably visualize this one, even if you weren't watching at the time. Billy Beane’s feisty Oakland underdogs began the streak in third place in the AL West, 4 1/2 games out, and finished it with a 3 1/2-game lead, going on to win the division. Each of the final three victories during this stretch were walk-offs, culminating in a wild 12-11 victory over the Royals in which the A’s blew an early 11-0 lead before winning in the bottom of the ninth.

That A's team was then swept 3-0 by the Twins in the ALDS.
Ok they won 18 straight going into the WS

    https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-card...tober-success/

In fact, no team thatís run off a late-season streak ó starting in August or September ó of more than 11 wins has even reached the World Series during the division play era (1969 onward):
According to that, there have only been 14 teams in 52 years that have more than 11 wins in August or September that have gone into the playoffs. That's incredibly rare, obviously. My back of the napkin calculations tell me there have been roughly 300 playoff teams over that time. Of those 300 teams less than 4% of the teams going into the playoffs had a streak anywhere close to what the Cardinals are doing. What that means is attempting to draw any conclusion on this with that data set is going to be tough to do given how random the playoffs are. As we all know, the best regular season doesn't often win the World Series, and the same principle applies here: sometimes the things that allow for sustained postseason success don't translate into a short series against one opponent.

With that said, I don't think anyone is guaranteeing postseason success just because the Cardinals have won 16 straight. We all know the WC game is a coin flip. Even the NLDS has some randomness to it. When the Cardinals won in 2006 against the Detroit Tigers, the Tigers were infamously picked by USA Today to win in three, mocking the incredible mismatch. I'm just glad my team is going to have a chance at playing some meaningful baseball in October.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Not exactly related, but I read something recently that reminded me: Fangraphs predicted the Cardinals to win 76 games in the Spring. They also predicted the Giants to win 79. I guess we don't need to put much weight on those predictions come the Spring

I didn't take the off day into account: Cole will pitch the 2nd game in the series with Toronto. And Ray will pitch the 3rd game--I was hoping we'd miss him this series. Makes sense though as both will then be ready for the wild card game, if either of them make it.

Boston plays 3 with the O's now (followed by 3 with Wash). Toronto plays 3 with the O's to close out the season. Yanks get TB. Ugh. Hopefully by then they've clinched the 1 seed and are resting guys.

I wonder if it comes into the Rays thinking at all if there is an opportunity to keep New York out of the playoffs, you do it? Of course, this isn't the same Tampa Bay that used to bend over and grab their ankles every time New York came to town, but still - out of Boston, Toronto and New York, who do they prefer least to play? And not sure how much of a chance Oakland or Seattle have to play themselves into position, especially since they are currently playing each other?

Looking at the stats below, for what it's worth, I would think the Rays would want the Yankees to make it. lol

TB vs Toronto: 11-8 83 runs scored/76 runs allowed
TB vs Boston: 11-8 106 runs scored/104 runs allowed
TB vs NYY: 9-7 82 runs scored/44 runs allowed

And while I'm at it, TB was 1-6 against Seattle this year. Oakland is basically done.

It wasn't just Fangraphs..... Just about EVERYONE predicted the Giants and Cards to be middle of the road teams. Around or just below .500

They were real anomalies. With the Giants, it was the OLD guys in their mid 30s all stepped up and had great years (when most thought they would continue to decline), also with the pitching coming out of nowhere. Cards also had some good years from a few unexpected sources as well.

The Dodgers are going to end up leading MLB in ERA, WHIP, OBA and run differential, and barring a minor miracle, are not going to win the NL West.

Also, Max Scherzer is currently leading MLB in ERA, Julio Urias is leading MLB in wins, Walker Buehler is leading MLB in quality starts and Trea Turner is leading MLB in batting average and hits. Crazy that they could be eliminated in a one game playoff with the Cardinals because the friggin' Giants just won't lose.

Whatís even stupider is a team like the Braves can get to the NLCS easier than the Dodgers can.

Itís staggering to me that a team with the roster the Giants have has won 102 games. That has to be the worst roster ever to win that many games in the history of the sport.

But yeah the Dodgers have completely been fucked this year. Very bizarre. Hopefully things will be back to normal next year and the Giants with their lousy roster will win 70 games again.
