Many people have said Ed's lead playing style only really emerge about 6 months before they recorded VHI. He wasn't playing in the "EVH style" in 73-76 yet.

That's not true. Only the tapping emerged in '77, but listen to plenty of club days boots. Ed is blazing away like himself, albeit obviously a younger more raw version. Women And Children First is sort of like the "Club Days" version of Ed on a VH album. Not a lot of tapping, just blazing blues based fretwork by a master. Probably no coincidence that several tracks are from the Club Days.

This. His solo on Take Your Whiskey Home never gets talked about.

    But it really should be.

Women And Children First should all be talked about more. A LOT more.

My favorite guitar and drum tones ever from Ed and Al on that record. The Whiskey solo is a like a technically superior version of something Jimmy Page wouldve played. The intro and solo in Fools...the incendiary solo on Romeo Delight...ditto the solos on LOC.

I was just listening to this today actually. Fury, innovation,
    creativity, intensity, TONE:

The amp just sounds like its going to melt. I can only imagine Dave being able to write lyrics and a melody to that.

Even something that would seem to be simple like Whiskey, Alex is swinging on it. Just listen to his feel on the hi hats on that tune.

More proof that Ed's guitar sound wasn't all that distorted. It was just louder than holy hell and the overdriven tubes were ready to melt.

Although on these isolated guitar tracks the "hair factor" of the sound is magnified because we're just hearing one instrument in the mix. Guitar sounds a bit trebly and hairy around the edges. And the drums while technically exquisite also sound a bit flat, for the same reason. They're not meant to sound dynamic on their own. They're meant to sit properly in the mix.

Ed and Alex.....one of the best combinations of guitars and drums. Not only individually but how they complemented each other.

As much as I say that was never a big fan of KISS, and I think Ed and Al were pretty much told how to play by Gene, this is still pretty amazing. It's amazing when you think that KISS was one of the biggest rock bands of the 70's and two unknown guys basically demoed up future songs for the next KISS record. Back in those days I doubt Ed and Al could barely rub two nickels together and here they are putting down future tracks with the bass player of arguably the biggest rock band at that time. Whether or not Ed and Al liked the songs, liked how they played or thought much of any of it, it is still a real compliment to just how good those two were at such a young age. I'm sure Gene would have loved to have them for KISS but thank the Lord that history happened the way it did and we got all that VH.

They wouldn't have worked for Kiss. Things worked out for the best, for both bands.

1 - Agreed. I've been listening to these old demos in months and I'm sure Gene won't put them down for now. This is some good shit for him, no doubt!

2 - I really never cared about Tunnel of Love or Have Love/Got Love for Sale. But Christine 16 is a good Pop Rock tune. I do prefer the original recording even though Edward and Alex Van Halen helped The Demon recording these tunes. But they were probably doing a favor and getting to know a little more about studio and production. The original one from Love Gun kicks, even more with a fast tempo beat on the 1st verse. I'm not a Peter Criss fan, but to me he did a nice job there.

And those tempos, man! Alex was on fire!!

It's a crime people who would skip ANY tune from the classic records, specially the fast tempo ones like LOC!!

Kinda true to an extent though because some his his biggest styles--tapping and whammy stuff--were more prevalent closer to the first album.

No. Ed agreed & granted permission for Gene to use these 3 demo's on Gene's Vault because this time when Gene asked he offered Ed the other original VH demo master tapes from 1976 as an inducement. So EVH & now his estate is in possesion of those 76 masters. As it should be.

( Which possibly might be more than the 10 songs leaked years ago. ??? )

But- After all these years hoping to hear these 3 GS 1977 demos with Ed & Al assuming they would sound like VH with Gene after finally hearing them for the first time a few years ago can honestly say my expectations assuming they would be awesome was ultimatley a huge letdown overall. Very deflating.

Honestly- I personally could barely tell for sure if it was them even knowing it was. Had to listen a few times but even still. I'll probably never play them again. Huge letdown.
