    Default EVH Wolfgang Special question

I have perhaps the most random question of the day... I was restringing my Wolfgang Special, and I noticed the bridge pickup is angled forward (the bobbin closest to the neck is pointing toward the strings and the bobbin closer to the bridge is angled closer to the body). I've owned this guitar for five years, and I've never noticed this before. The pickup feels solidly screwed into the wood (it's doesn't move at all if I try to jostle it).

I thought I was losing it, so I asked my wife, and she concurred that the pickup is indeed slanted. I looked online to see if this is how they come from the factory, but no photos I saw seemed to look like what's going on with my guitar. I can post a picture if it's helpful, but I was wondering if something is amiss, or, like the dealer told my parents when the headlight cover stopped working on their then-new 1977 Ford Thunderbird, "they all do that."

    Thanks!

That probably doesn’t make any discernible difference in the sound of the guitar.

    Not something to worry about.

It should not be like that. It may or may not be a big deal... you would have to try to know for sure. It is within the realm of possibility that you flatten it out and think "darn, it sounded better when it was slanted"!

My Peavey HP2 has the same problem on the neck pickup. I made a shim and stuck it under the baseplate so that when I tightened the screws all the way, the pickup sits flat.

since these are body mounted the legs may have been slightly tweaked. are the pickups level to the strings? they need to be level to strings not the neck or body. pics would be a huge help.

If he’s never noticed it in five years of owning the guitar, then it’s not something worth changing by a few millimetres.

It's probably the foam that they use under the pickup that is pushed to one side, pushing it up higher than the other side. Could probably be fixed with one of these:

    https://www.fu-tone.com/product-cate...pickup-system/

You just have to make sure you don't short the contacts on the baseplate out against it with some electrical tape, but it looks like a pretty good system.

Thanks, all. I guess I should have been clearer - I could swear it was dead-straight prior to this, but it's not like I took reference photos of the pickup from the side. I took it to a shop for a setup a few weeks ago, and I didn't care for the strings that were put on it, so I went to go switch them, and that's when I noticed the pickup angle. If you can make it out in the photo, it looks like the neck pickup is slowly sinking into the ocean.

I'm usually on the bridge pickup, and when I've switched to the neck, I don't really notice a difference in the sound (at least, not at the bedroom-sound level I've been playing at lately), so I'll probably take the advice here and leave it alone. nobozos, thanks for that tip - I might give it a try if the angle bothers me.

What probably happened is when you took it for the setup, the tech saw that the neck pickup was too close to the strings and adjusted it down. The foam is probably pushed more to the front under the pickup, thereby rocking one coil down further than the other.

exactly.... all my PVs (standards and specials), EVH's (USAs and specials) and EBMMs have the PUPs a little off kilter. Nothing to worry about and doesn't make any difference. Your fine

I have several guitars where the pickups are slightly slanted one way or the other. I don’t think it means anything at all. I’ve never even considered worrying about anything like that. I can’t possibly imagine a slight slant one way or the other affecting your tone at all. And certainly not to the point where you could even discern the difference.

The strings aren't usually parallel to the top of the body, so a slant in a pickup is almost always a non-issue.

    Don't worry about it!

Just realized I never closed the circle on this one. Thanks for the responses. My only concern is that it looks like it might fret out when I do a bend on the high E at the 22nd fret, but the string just clears the bobbin, so I'm not going to worry about it unless the angle gets more drastic and touches the string.

    Thanks, everyone!
