    EXACTLY

However I donno how can anyone criticize the "Jump" lyrics. They represent 80s optimism (even though the song's inspiration isn't really a happy event) and self affirmation. Yes Jump has been played out and the keyboard sound is a bit dated, but it's still a great piece of music.

    I don't get it and glad I don't.
    DAVE vs SAMMY

People need to let this go.....it is like comparing an ex wife to your current wife...you can say how things would have be different if she were still here but she left you, so you moved on with your life.....

Same with Van Halen...would they have liked to have Roth stay, yes...but he decided to leave so they moved on.......

and the rest is history….. well until 1996……..lol

The breakdown in I'm the One is classic! As said, it's part of what put VH above the rest. Very few bands could pull that off. Or had the ability to even attempt it. It totally brings home the "swing" of the song. I wish they woulda done more of it. Happy Trails is equally classic.

I feel the same about You and Your Blues. Dave workin' in those songs...19th Nervous Breakdown, Red house, Crossroads, Evil Woman...thought that was pretty cool.

I wondered if someone was going to list the “1-800” as the worst lyric.

Yeah, I bet if he could back in time, he would get rid of any 1-800 or social media references.

Reminds me of the Modern Drummer quote from Alex

"One of the things that made everything work was that we came from opposite ends of the spectrum. Dave was vaudeville. … Ed and I were coming from Cream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath. So having that strange chemistry is what made it work, oddly enough. But you do need a mediator. Otherwise we would never have gotten anything done.”

LOL...I was going to mention that 1-800 lyric too.

Doesn't that go back to 'Just Like Paradise?' I thought he sneaks one in at the end of that tune, IIRC.

The essence of VH was made up of a lot more things than only those you mentioned. For one, they had a sense of humor.

When I first heard I'm the One, I got a kick out of the ba-bada's--I thought it was funny that they did that. I was surprised that something so "odd" was thrown in to that heavy song. Honestly, I think it's perfect. I love that it's in there and think it's a brilliant part of the song. As others have said, it's just another thing that set them apart--like Big Bad Bill, Happy Trails, etc.

First line that came to mind:

"A slice at a time, like a pizza pie."

But I agree with most of what has been mentioned in this thread. Except the hate for I'm the One. That's just crazy--I love the breakdown.

If I had a dollar for every time somebody said "and I was like" or "and he was like" or "and she was like", I would have "like" a lot of dollars.

I sometimes think people who don't get the humor of Dave era Van Halen are the same people who don't get This Is Spinal Tap.
