Default Mitch Malloy was "not attracted" to VH3 songs

Can't say that his take here surprises me at all.

Also, not that it really matters, but "It's The Right Time" is absolute garbage, imo. The Gary version, "That's Why I Love You" is 1000 times better, and absolutely should have been on the album, but oh well ..

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.

I’m not attracted to Mitch Malloy’s cliché-ass sounding voice.

I think Mitch had the same reaction 95% of fans had when they first dropped the needle on III.

I watched Beautiful Girls on HBO last night and I was about as attracted to Rosie O'Donnell as I am to the songs on VH III.

TWILY should've been on it and released as the first single. They may've stood a chance.

The first single for the next Van Halen album after Balance should have been something like this with that Dave guy on vocals and that Mike guy on bass ...

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

It's so baffling when you you think about it (and a MASSIVE shame), that in such a short span of time, Eddie and the band went from the Humans Being/Me Wise Magic musical direction to what ended up being on VH3. I mean, sure, there were hints of the same vibe with Fire In The Hole, and even Without You to some extent, but damn. Like I said, Malloy's take here is no surprise at all to me, because I certainly felt the exact same way the first time I popped in the cd. Ugh. I WANTED to love it so bad, but couldn't even FORCE myself to. Ugh.

It was just a weird thing at that time all together. So many factors. Singers, musical direction, Eddie's demons etc.... It's tough to hear some of this stuff.

Been lurking since the Pleasure Done days but this is my first post. I might be imagining this but I swear I remember a III era interview with Ed (Guitar World?) where he talked about III being the first time he wrote the music to the lyrics rather than writing the music first. We all know Ed isn't necessarily the most reliable source in the matters but it would explain Eds change of direction on III. Then again, this is all contradictory to Mitch's story. Thoughts?

I seem to remember Gary saying this. That would seem to be a dangerously huge departure from a formula that had produced success for 20 years.

Ed had a while different side of himself musically and I think he wanted to explore that and release an album like that. I don't think he expected the negativity that came with that.

I’m sure there was some grain of truth to Ed writing music to lyrics, but my guess is the majority of the music was written. In the Jason Becker video from ‘96 he’s playing a riff that ended up in Without You. The Dirty Water Dog riff was basically “I Want Some Action”, which was a 5150 leftover.
Malloy’s “It’s The Right Time” was a cringeworthy next to TWILY, which was a pretty solid tune, and should’ve had some kind of official release. At least as a b-side.

Going from Sammy Hagar to David Lee Roth and then to Mitch Malloy and then Gary Cherone will never make sense to me. Then again, what do I know? I've only been a Van Halen fanatic since 1978 ...
