Tons of country guys use the EVH products as well.

But the Stealth and EL34? That's where they get way too compressed and over-the-top in terms of the amount of gain. I understand the metal players flocking to those.
I remember all the hardcore & metal core kids buying up peavey 5150's because it sounded better than mesas & they kept cranking the presence knob all the way up to get some high end on their "woof woof meow meow" riffs.

I thought it was totally wrong to do; but I kicked myself in the ass and said to myself, "How many people said the same thing to Ed when he turned everything on his amp all the way up?"

My 50 watt 3 is stellar. I'm a sucker for the blue channel.

My LBXii has become my amp of choice for everything.

I don't believe the gain is the issue. Most of my 5150's (peaveys included) have never seen their gain knobs beyond 3 & 1/2 or 4...

... but the volume knobs: they've definitely seen their share of Spinal tap moments.

I do have the lunchbox with the blue & red channel. Itís a cool amp, but way more gain than needed. Anything past about 11 oíclock on the blue channel is pretty much unusable. I wish there was a wider sweep on that channel that started cleaner and got dirtier more gradually. And Iíve got to run an EQ in the loop to dial down the fizz and ice picky-ness that all the 5150 amps seem to have. But I do get a good classic/ hard rock sound out of it, especially using a lower output pickup.

Anyone else feel like the new finishes are a little...tacky?

Iíd slave over a simple dark purple/amber flame top anyday.

But then again...Iím left handed and all we get are basic colors in Arctic White or Black.

Donít you want my money? Begging for a custom shop online order from them big time.

Default Are 5150 IV amps out? coming?

I have an original Peavey 5150 that I bought used in 1998 and I have been using it for over 22 years. I have said many times over the years Iím not a huge fan of it, as I think itís too much distortion for what I like, but Iíve been able to make it work for me all these years. I play with the preamp on about four on the lead channel and with the use of a BBE 262 maximizer I get a pretty classic sound out of it. Clean channel sucks for clean but thatís what I use it for, and then I boost my overall signal with an MXR Micro Amp for leads.

I do share sonic space with our singer, so you know weíre battling it out, so I need an amp that is powerful. He plays a Peavey JSX on 10 so itís a war. I am much more of a tone hound than he is. To him itís just all about gain and being loud, so therein lies my battle Iíve had with him for the last 22 years. On our recorded music, weíve used amp modelers for convenience, so obviously itís not an issue and I control our sounds and they work well together on tape. Itís just live itís always been a battle and the Peavey 5150 is a fucking tank. I have put that thing through the mill and it has never let me down.

I canít tell you how many times one of these death metal guys comes up to me at our studio and says ďOh man an old school 5150 those are amazing.Ē So yeah I get even that ampís sound appeals to guys who play music like that. I just think itís kind of ironic when you consider who is the man behind them.

I also totally get that the sound available on the new 5150 amps is more akin to someone who plays death metal, but it still doesnít make me want to hear that shit all day long on those amps. They are a little more versatile than that. At least thatís my feeling even though honestly Iíve never played a Fender version.

I have both the 5150II and a EVH 5150III combo and the 2 is a great amp. Has a lot of balls and since I put vintage tubes in it it sounds great. The 3 is more versatile. But I get an amazing time out of the 2.

On channel 2, having the gain knob set to like 9:00 is equivalent to having it cranked all the way up on my amp (Splawn Quick Rod, Gear 1). Channel 3 is even worse. Everyone demos them with terrible chugga-chugga death metal tones because it is hard to get anything else out of these amps! Actually, the closest I got to a decent rock tone (in the vein of EVH's 80s tone) was channel 1, with the gain turned up fairly high. Channel 1 actually sounded pretty good and was by far my favorite, but the amps just are not usable for what I need.

I never use the red channel on my 5150 combo. I live on the blue channel. sounds awesome for all of our 80s guitar heroes

Hey, what kind of EQ are you using? I have a 5150 6L6 combo. I love it, but I find the same thing - a little too harsh, raspy at times. I want a bit more warmth overall.
Do you recommend any upgrades for this amp? Tubes?

Theres a company called "Voodoo" that does amp modifications for the EVH 5150. Anyone familiar with them?

I have the MXR 10 band EQ. Pretty much everything flat at 0, and drop the 8k all the way down to -12. Takes the fizz out. Did the same for my Peavey 212 combo.

FWIW, when my original tubes cratered in my combo, I replaced them with JJ tubes from a set I got off of eBay. I much prefer them, and I feel they are considerably warmer than the ones I had previously.

very cool, thanks. You're running the EQ in your loop correct?

Currently i have an eq setting in my digitech rp 360... should i disengage that entirely if i were to use the mxr for the "fizz control"

with the mxr set this way.. .you're not using it for any tonal coloring.. just to eliminate this frequency?

    thanks!!

Yes in the loop. Everything else I just run flat at 0. Thereís a volume control on the very left I usually back down so the amp can cranked a little more. Not sure on the Digitech. I do run a Tube Screamer in front. Just adds some fullness to the sound, not really for gain. On the lunchbox the gain doesnít go munch past 9 oíclock if Iím using a higher output humbucker like a JB.
