I think Amazon remastered 5150

Sounds pretty good on headphones. I just noticed today that it was in “super HD”. Sounds louder and there is bass. A treat for saint Edwards birthday perhaps. Hate to advertise for Bezos but this is a very pleasant surprise.

Also apologies if this isn’t the right place for this or worthy of a thread, don’t really know where else to put this.

They seem to boost the volume at least. My ears might deceive me but whatever copy they have up there has some bass for sure. A lot more then my Japan masters. Worth checking out if you have the service, maybe I’m crazy.

Good!

I always felt that 5150 and OU812 had relatively low volume compared to the other albums.

I always have to crank it a bit higher to get the same level out of those two albums.

No... Amazon doesn't have access to the master multi-track recordings of any artist.

They deliver the digital copy at whatever bit-rate they received it in. From there it's delivered to what ever stream rate the user is receiving their data from. The difference between a 128kbps and 320kbps digital music file is the larger size has approximately twice the data and therefore a fuller sound.

That's all relative to device playing the file, EQ settings and the speakers, headphones, or ear-buds delivering it to the ears...

What the original poster mistakes as "remastered" is just a higher quality digital recording, streamed and played back with higher quality sound gear. It's the simple difference between an old mp3 file played on a cheap iPod into $2.00 ear buds compared to a 5G streamed smart phone with $500 headphones... same original recording... just better listening equipment.

I have both Amazon and Spotify and there does appear to be differences between the two. The Amazon one does sound better. My Amazon is set to Best Available quality w/Loudness Normalization and I just maxed out everything I could on Spotify and Amazon still sounds fuller, louder.

You can buy the WB version of OU812, or the Amazonbasics version of OU812.

The Amazonbasics version is as good (or better) than the original, but with all
new Bezos mixes, including powerful Bass and better mids.

Mostly correct... however your first point is incorrect. Mastering is not done at the multitrack phase... it is done with the 2 track stereo mixdown tapes (for older mixes, files for newer mixes.)

Remastering of a previously mastered 2track master is possible... this can include eq (bass/mid boosting) as well as dynamic processing multiband limiting.

Just clarifying. The rest was right on.

Check it out for yourself. It’s louder and there is more bass. It’s not exactly hard to slam it through a compressor with an eq and perhaps that’s what they did before uploading it.

To be honest, the term re-mastering is miss-used, by all of us, myself included, as a short cut term.

Any re-do of an album (for lack of a better term) needs to be both re-mixed and a re-mastered to have any impact. If you really want the bass to shine for example, you can get some of that done by just remastering it, but you would really want to get in and remix it to truly have any type of impact.

Exactly... you can't alter any specific recorded instrument/element in an already mixed/mastered stereo recording without a remix of the original multi-track master recordings.

What others refer to as "mastering" is just applying EQ and compression to specific frequencies in either the right and/or left channel of the stereo recording. Enhance just the bass frequencies and you may create the illusion of bringing the bass guitar forward into the mix... but you'll also be bringing those same exact frequencies from the drums, guitars, keyboards and even vocals forward also. There's a lot of shared frequency tones in a rock recording.
