Yeah, the solo's on 1984 are almost like him saying:

I still gotta raise the bar, and be THE guy.

Next album, Sammy onboard, he kind of abandoned that mindset and
fell in love with writing tunes that maybe he couldn't, with Dave.

I'm not really a KISS fan (I could probably assemble a single CD of stuff that I truly like... maybe), but through the years Gene has become way more tolerable than Paul, IMO. In his older years, Gene seems to have dropped the schtick a bit and is capable of being more real and sincere. As Ashe said, he really seems to have a genuine affinity for VH, particularly Ed. Obviously he knew/knows the guys, but I think that deep down Gene is just a fan like the rest of us. He gets it.
He had said on numerous occasions that he discovered Van Halen.

But definitely yes, over the last few years Gene has definitely dialled back the “I’m God‘s gift to Women” and “I’m the greatest thing since sliced Challah” act.

I think Shannon and the kids getting older had a lot to do with that.

    Excerpt from Ted's book:

ED & i were just jamming in the studio...
"Get behind the drums, Ted, i got this idea..."

Usually, Al was out hunting for girls, or drinking himself into oblivion
    at the Rainbow.

Boys will be boys, he would laugh, after stumbling in from an all nighter.

But Al's absence actually lead to me playing drums on a few different cuts,
    on a few different albums:

Outta Love, Again from the second record.
Loss of control, featured on Women & Children First.
Lastly, "House of Pain", ending track on mega seller 1984.

We also got Nicolette Larson to help us out again, during those same sessions.
She went uncredited, but that's her behind the electro drums, at the very beginning
    of "Hot for Teacher."

Don't get me wrong, I love Al's drumming on the 84 version, from the intro to the fade. My point was that the demo is a more straight-forward up-tempo rocker throughout.

I guess what I'm saying is that if they took the demo and worked it up, basically 'as is' from the demo form with '84' musicianship, it would be better than the current 84 version. (the opposite of what I said before about stripping down the later version, let's build up the early one--lol). But the song evolved to what it became and it's awesome.

Like I've said, they feel like 2 completely different songs.

I wanna dislike Gene because of what he and Paul did to Kiss. But when I hear his interviews and saw his reality show I cannot help but like the man.

What ? The iconic HFT drum intro is actually by Nicolette Larson ? That's hilarious if it's really true.

Wait, jape, is Ted saying that's him playing drums on those tracks? Or just that he kind of worked them up with Ed in the studio before Al came in and recorded the tunes? Like there may be some demos of those tunes with Ted on them.

No disrespect to Ted, I know he was a drummer, but those aren't simple songs for drums.

It was her "Beat it" moment.

She wouldn't even take a session fee.

Haha...I looked back and apparently missed your first post to JD about Ted playing the drum parts on HOP. Had I seen that initially I would've got the joke of your "excerpt from Ted's book." My bad. LOL
