Fun game against Vegas last night. My favorite part was at 5:02 below. Vegas' $8.8 million dollar, 6' 3", 210 lb veteran defenseman getting pick pocketed, out skated, and outmuscled by a 6', 195 lb, $880,000 young forward:

It happens...lol... I am sure it was fun for Blues fans considering it was AP.

While Faulk, Krug, and Parayako are younger and cheaper then Pietrangelo, the Blues will miss him at times this year. Vegas sure went all in on that deal... 7 years left is a looooong time.

Even saw some rumors today that the Blues would trade Vince Dunn....

    Big news of the day...

Penguins GM Jim Rutherford steps down.

Won 2 Cups in 2016 & 2017..... But several questionable trades and signings the last 3 years. Also won a Cup with Carolina as their GM for 20 years. Older guy though at age 71.

    https://www.tsn.ca/jim-rutherford-re...sons-1.1583721

    +++

Going to be a very in-demand job. Get your resume ready.....

    per TSN
This is all still fresh but would be surprising if former Pens AGM Jason Botterill wasn’t a candidate in some form. Just took a job with Seattle.

Penguins will immediately begin a broad search, both looking at internal and external possibilities. No firm time line but I also don't think the Penguins want this to to drag too long.

Faulk has been great so far this year, Krug has been meh, and Parayko has been pretty bad, although he's battling an injury of some sort. They haven't said what it is, so naturally people suspect he had Covid because he's looked so sluggish, but who knows. Hopefully he turns the corner though because he's counted on as being a shut down defenseman and teams have been walking all over him these first few games.

As for Dunn, apparently they explored trading him in the offseason but ended up signing him to a deal as an RFA. It's not a huge amount and there's some speculation Dunn is salty about it. The Blues also have a glut of LHD on the roster and in the pipeline, and with Krug being a similar but better player as Dunn, he's expendable. Rumors are Armstrong's asking price is a 1st round pick.

Not to beat a dead horse two weeks into the season, but again the Blues end up on the short end of a Department of Player Safety ruling. This time it's Mark Stone cheap shotting a defenseless Tyler Bozak behind the play. Direct hit to the head, and the ruling was a two minute interference penalty. Tyler Bozak is now out with a concussion. Department of Player Safety will not penalize Mark Stone. Hit is shown below after the short fight:

For the record, Robert Bortuzzo is still out with a concussion from the shot he took to the head which resulted in no fine or penalty against Colorado that I linked to a few posts back.

Way to go Department of Player Safety.

After the 2nd Vegas game was cancelled because Alex Pietrangelo was too embarrassed to be seen on the ice again (I kid, he reportedly was under Covid precautions along with the rest of the coaching staff), it was nice to see the Blues back in action this weekend. They won both games in Anaheim, 6-1 and 4-1. Their first game was stronger, but they looked pretty solid last night, albeit against a team that's going to struggle this year.

Vince Dunn had a goal in the 6-1 victory and has looked better since being a health scratch the other night. Apparently he was at the center of what was going down with Pittsburgh, as there are reports that Rutherford had a deal in place for Vince Dunn that set the turn of events in motion that ended with him stepping down. If true, I wonder if it going to be a swap of Dunn and Letang?

That wasn't a direct hit to the head. Maybe there's another angle that shows it better? Because in this replay, he doesn't even come close to making contact with Bozak's head. He hit him in the upper right side of his chest.

That's an interference penalty, not a suspension.

Bozak's concussion would call that into question. You usually don't get those from chest shots. He's still out with that concussion. Stone's left shoulder gets right under Bozak's chin as Stone comes up to hit him which is what causes his head to jerk back.

You can actually get a concussion from whiplash. He caught him by surprise in his upper chest and his head snapped back. More than likely this caused the concussion. His face slamming into the ice, didnít help either.

In full speed, that looks a lot worse. Based on that replay, that canít be more than a 2 min minor for interference. To me itís pretty obvious.

Maybe the argument can be made that itís a predatory hit, but there wasnít any contact with the head.

Stone definitely deserved to answer for it on the ice, though.

McDavid is awesome, but how in the world can you have 22 points in 11 games and have an even +/-? That just doesn't seem possible. Just the other night against OTT he had 5 points and was a -1. I know +/- isn't always the best reflection of someone's defensive responsibility and certain things are outside your control, but that's pretty crazy.

Obviously the league felt the same as you which is why they didn't punish Stone, but I disagree with it.

My derision for the Department of Player safety of whatever name they have used for it over the years goes back much further, though. Joe Thornton's head shot to David Perron nearly ended his career and Thornton got two games. Perron didn't play for over a year afterwards and it set his career way back. For a great story about that hit, check out this clip from a podcast. Be forewarned, it's NSFW with the language involved, but it's worth it. It's Kelly Chase, who at the time was a radio color guy for the Blues, talking about the aftermath of the hit and how pissed he was that no one on the team responded. It's only about 2 minutes, but it's awesome. Kelly Chase bleeds Blue and always has. For the record, this interaction all happened under a different ownership group and he loves the current group.

McDavid is raking up HUGE points on the Power Play. That doesn't factor into +/-.

5v5, Oilers are average at best. Even McDavid's line in their own end. Their poor defense and subpar goaltending is also a big factor.

Some rare #OldSchoolHockey right off the face off drop in the Ducks/Kings game. 2 of the last few NHL Heavyweights. Nicolas Deslauriers & Kurtis MacDermid have a pretty good rivalry going.
