Unfortunately in 1996, Ed and Al thought they could continue the band's success with a third singer. They had to learn that hard lesson before they would be willing to put up with Dave....or Sam in 2004 for that matter.

I wonder if Sam or Dave had been asked to stay on in 96 and people matured somehow if Eddies substance abuse spiral post VHIII never happens and as a result we have an Eddie right now. I know you can't pinpoint when his abuse was enough to catch up with him later on in life, but its late and I'm just thinking to myself.

I love VH to death as they been my band since I was 11 years old but man have they made some bad decisions.
Ed was there safety net. He held it all together. If he hadn’t of passed away, “Unboxed” wouldn’t of happened. He would’ve organised other ways to pay Betsy in the divorce. “Balance” would’ve been a different album too, plus we’d probably have 4 or 5 studio albums by now.

VH in 1996 definitely had some highs and definitely some lows. Such a weird year in the band’s history.

CVH is my absolute favorite era of the band, and I was beyond ecstatic to see the original 4 on stage again. But, I recall Dave looking like he had his pants pulled up to the hilt, and some weird tie off of his shirt that looked like a halter top or something. And dancing. It was my first clue that culturally, Dave had slipped a cog.

I think he was just very excited. His antics at that appearance reminds me now of the hyper-active boys that i see in my kids elementary school.

Also, per DLR, MTV asked him to "ham it up".

That's like giving an 8 ball to Lindsay Lohan.

Unless they played guitar none of them knew who VH was. You bet your ass they knew AC/DC and Aerosmith though.

That leads me to believe that since the early 2000s the cultural relevance of Van Halen wasn't anywhere near the three aforementioned bands. And I still firmly believe that with proper management from 1996 onward Van Halen would've seen more pop culture relevancy and awareness.

Again, just my assessment based on my anecdotal experiences.
I played with a younger guy a few years ago who was really good, we did a few shows together. And you know how when you first start playing with guys, you all ask who you like, etc., and he knew who Van Halen was, but he didn't know much about them or any of their songs.

This is a guitar player...that was good. Blew my mind. Didn't think it was possible to be a guitar player and not know Clapton songs, LZ songs, Hendrix, VH, etc. Was (and still is) hard to fathom.

That's a great way to put it. Dave was pushing the envelope in the 80's and everyone kind of went with him. Then at some point in the late 80's he kept pushing and didn't realize the rest of the culture wasn't along for the ride anymore. That continued to about 2006 or so. He still hasn't quite gotten back to the rest of us, but he's pulled closer to the pack, that's for sure.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I don't think the other singers had that much of a chance to begin with. At that point it was Dave or bust. They blew it.

My question is- if Dave had reeled it in a little that night at the VMA’s and there wasn’t the backstage blowup, would they have still gone with a third singer? My guess is they’d have stayed with Dave until it would’ve inevitably fallen off the rails again.
