I maintain that if VH were properly managed in 1996 with either Dave or Sammy they would've had the cultural awareness and relevance that bands like Aerosmith and Bon Jovi have today. High school kids would be wearing the shirts regularly.

Now, instead, we may see an uptick in their relevance since Eddie has passed. But it'll never be what it could've been.

I see more Van Halen shirts than Aerosmith and Bon Jovi combined and it’s really not close

I was a senior in high school when things really came to a head in the fall of 1996. Balance was such an awesome album, and I really liked Humans Being and Respect the Wind. I always felt like the direction VH were heading musically was awesome. Darker, heavier, more meaningful. I wanted to like Van Halen 3 so badly, but it was clearly a mash up of Sammy-oriented material with Gary lyrics and vocals. It just never felt or sounded entirely right to me. I will say, another album with Sam as a follow-up to Balance and another Gary-led album are pretty high up on my "what if" wishlist.

In the end, I just wish they could have made more music.

This is especially true in my house.

Managers get paid a shit ton on money to handle just the kind of thing that happened here. Obviously things were not negotiated properly, communicated properly ( both within and outside the band) and contracted properly.

After a year like this, who could blame Ed and Al for just being shell shocked and having it derail the band's momentum after having a #1 album. What a free fall. But after 18 years of success who would have thought that it was a pretty much permanent derailment

Can you just imagine how amazing it would have been to have the original lineup back together in 1996?

Anecdotally, I taught guitar from 2012-2020 and I'd have to educate the majority of my students as to who Van Halen was. Meanwhile they were also coming in asking to learn AC/DC, Aerosmith or Bon Jovi tunes. Even when I was in high school in the mid-2000s I introduced most of my friends to VH. Unless they played guitar none of them knew who VH was. You bet your ass they knew AC/DC and Aerosmith though.

That leads me to believe that since the early 2000s the cultural relevance of Van Halen wasn't anywhere near the three aforementioned bands. And I still firmly believe that with proper management from 1996 onward Van Halen would've seen more pop culture relevancy and awareness.

Again, just my assessment based on my anecdotal experiences.

1996 Ed was on an amazing creative level. An Album of MWM type songs would’ve been stellar.

What a total shit-show 1996 was for VH. Not reuniting with Dave feels like the biggest missed opportunity in rock.

I think Dave was cool and funny as hell at the VMAs, but he could've turned it down one notch. Have to keep the "I want my MTV line" and the hip-swivel! Maybe just the dancing behind Beck giving his speech should've been nixed.
