New political forum guidelines *READ*

With the new year, we’ve decided to take a hard look at the Political Underground board, including whether or not it still serves a worthwhile function at VHLinks.com. The short of it is we have agreed there remains a need for this forum to exist here, as more than enough political discourse occurs within our community to warrant it. And, to be sure, VHLinks has certainly never only been about Van Halen.

That said, after much discussion among the moderators, we have agreed the culture of the Political Underground forum must change for us to be comfortable allowing it to still exist. The last few years have brought about innumerable occurrences of hate-filled diatribes and disrespect for your fellow human beings in this very forum. Political topics bring out the worst in people and, we know, we shouldn’t be surprised this forum isn’t excluded from that fact. However, our toleration of that behavior stops now.

The crux of the matter is this: We do not care on which side of the political fence you reside. There’s a place for every point of view on this board, and that includes discussions of a political nature. Rest assured, political opinions are quite varied even inside the mod room. However, this forum will now operate under strict rules of engagement. They are as follows:

1.Absolutely no name-calling or personal attacks
2.Disrespectful references to any race, religion or class of people will not be tolerated
3.Dramatic, declarative statements (“All Trump voters are racists.” “All Biden voters are socialist hypocrites.”) have no place in intelligent discourse. Do not make them
4.If you reference news articles or media coverage of any kind, only cite established, reputable outlets
5.Respect decisions by moderators. Do not bother contacting said moderator or an admin if you disagree with any corrective action taken. We do not care

To bottom-line it for you: Debate with intelligence, have respect for those with whom you share opposite views and, when constructing replies, consider deploying compassion first and foremost. Our members hail from places all around the world and have individual life experiences that inform how we feel and what we think. You don’t have to agree on something – no matter how divisive – to treat others with respect. It is your choice to do so.

Don’t like it? Stay out of the forum. Full stop. We will be liberal (heh) with thread closures for topics or discussions that don’t adhere to the above outlined rules. In some cases, we might choose to suspend or ban members who do not to respect this approach.

Political discourse need not involve words such as idiots, morons, socialists, racists murderers (abortion issue) etc.

Not singling anybody out because I've used those words but it's time to have adult discussion without all that.
