MICHAEL ANTHONY Says He Never Got To Reconcile With EDDIE VAN HALEN: 'It Kind Of Bothers Me'

During an appearance on the latest episode of the "Talkin' Rock With Meltdown" podcast, former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony was asked when the last time was that he spoke to Eddie Van Halen before the legendary guitarist died last October. Michael responded (hear audio below): "We actually hadn't spoken [for many years], and unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to. And, you know, it kind of bothers me, because we had some issues that were never resolved. But, I mean, what can you do? We were on track [for] a reunion, which I'm really sad that it never happened. But, you know, life and the show goes on."

That is very sad. Mike is such a great guy and in spite of everything that happened, he was willing to come back to the fold for the reunion that all of us hardcore VH fans had been waiting for since 1984. Sigh ...

Too bad when Sam had contact he didn't tell Mike to call him. I'm sure he and Mike talked to each when Sam finally talked too him.

I’m confused cause I could’ve sworn I read somewhere that Sammy said that Mikey did speak with Ed, but that it was for Mikey to elaborate on when the time was right.

He said “they did” or something like that after being asked if Mike and Ed spoke.

Somebody can correct me if I’m mistaken though.

If that's how it went down it is a little surprising Sam and Mike didn't call together, eventually. Or Mike reaching out, himself, shortly after Sam.

Thats piss weak by Mike IMO. He would of known how bad Ed was and still didnt call him. WTF!!!

It would be interesting to know if he has reached out to Al since Ed past but then and he didnt when their Mom died so I guess not..

Its kinda bothered me too that Sammy reached out, but not Mike. I think there's alot more underlying with Mike and Ed, than there was with Sam and Ed. Ed once said Mike never contacted him when he went through his cancer in 2000/01. He also said he never contacted him when their mother died, or when Ed went through his divorce. I think their relationship was too tainted and there was just no way of going back. Things like this happen everyday in life. Once a crack widens too much, you can't stitch it back up.

IIRC Ed told Sam “give Mike my love.” But that was it.

It’s a huge bummer they didn’t reconcile before Ed passed. Like others above me, I think this indicates there was more going on with the fracture of that relationship than we know.

Hopefully Mike and Wolf can connect and offer each other a slight semblance of closure.

Come on... these guys aren't teenagers living next door to each other nor are Mike and Sam married... for crying out loud. They're business associates in their 60's & 70's respectively.

Mike has his own 40+ year relationship, both business and personal with the Van Halens. It's not on any of us fans to judge any of those guys for what they did or didn't do in their personal relationships.

Wait a moment! The Photoshop incident, pay cut, reduced royalties, signing away MA rights, Sauce Sobolewski... Eddie could have called MA too. They both had like 16 years or so to do it.

Sure, Ed could've called Mike when he was dying. He didn't. Sometimes you just have to fucking swallow your own pride, even if you think are the one who was wronged, and make the call yourself if you deep down care about reconciliation. Mike didn't do that, and most likely probably regrets it. Or hopefully he regrets it, although that last part of his statement, something about the show goes on, seems a bit flippant about the whole thing to me.

I agree with most, there was a much deeper rift there that widened over many years. Sadness.

Hey, I agree completely. But Eddie could have called anytime between 2004 and, lemme say, 2015.
