Lol. Brett, how do you REALLY feel about the Clippers?

I mean look I can be honest I donít think thereís a ton of guys on the Lakers I like as people you know. Iím not a LeBron guy. Heís here and thatís great but Iím never gonna be a fan off the court. AD is OK, but you know heís not the most charismatic guy in the world. Iíll always be a Lakers fan but I donít have the same connection to the team that I did back in the day. So many things have changed in the last several years. Itís crazy I still donít think Iíve really gotten over Kobe dying, and itís like part of my fandom went with him. Hard to explain.

I would imagine it was much easier for you to feel more of a connection to the Lakers when Kobe was there. He was a constant.

Did part of your fandom go when Kobe retired? Sometimes that happens with the end of an era. Or was it more when he died?

For me it was much easier having familiar (and reliable) faces on the teams I liked year in and year out. Another factor is as I get older, sports isn't as important as it was when I was younger. I still root for my teams but it's no where near the level it was 20+ years ago.

I was OK when he retired because I knew heíd still be around and would always be a part of the Lakers. Him dying was a finality to that obviously and yeah itís around his death. I was good with him retiring I knew he needed to retire, he wasnít the same player anymore. Injuries caught up with him.

But yeah Iím just like you sports are still important to me but I am nowhere near the fan I was 20 years ago. I donít get that upset when they lose anymore, and itís not the end of the world when they donít win. My disappointment doesnít last very long. Like when the Lakers lost this year I didnít really even get that bothered by it. In fact I was kind of glad because I thought they needed the rest for next year.

Also when they won I wasnít as excited as I usually get around a championship. I was happy about it but it wasnít the same. I think I was actually happier about the Dodgers just because the Dodgers have been close so many times the last few years. I was more excited about the title but even that I wasnít completely over the moon about. I think the pandemic mightíve messed a lot of that up too.

I get more excited on hitting a six team parlay than I do about whether or not a specific team wins or loses.

The only teams I am really invested in anymore are my kids teams. I live and die with Brown University football now, of all things.

Whatís sad about this, Brett, is that back when I lived and died with the team and watched every game, I spent seasons watching a lineup like this around Kobe.

Now they have Davis and Lebron and I can only catch what I can here and there.

Yeah that wasnít a great time thatís for sure. But it was really only a couple seasons where they had those crappy teams. And Kobe dragged those teams kicking and screaming into the playoffs anyway. The next season after that team in your pic they were in the Finals again.

I donít see that many games anymore because we donít have local cable so unless the Lakers are on ESPN or TNT I donít usually see the games. But like I said Iím honestly not that bummed about it. I can see the box scores and can watch the highlights I know whatís going on. Like I said I just donít live and die with them anymore and LeBron and AD will never be what guys like Magic, Kareem, Worthy, B Scott, Coop, Kobe Shaq, even Gasol were for me. Very few of these players stay with teams forever anymore so itís hard to even develop that connection. Weíll see if AD finishes his career here, but my guess is he wonít. But I do appreciate the positive impact that LeBron has had on the team in terms of success again and a product worth cheering for. But heís not Kobe for the franchise, and he never will be. His passing is such a gigantic loss for the Laker community and for the city. I mean it was a spectacle when he would show up for the games with Gigi. They would give the guy a standing ovation every time. His presence was more entertaining than the freaking game going on. Players made it a point to go over and talk to him in game when they could. I really donít think Iíve ever seen that from any other player including Jordan. Michael Jordan basically ran away from Chicago as soon as left there and heís really never come back. And he was never around the organization afterwards like Kobe was. Plus Kobe took pride in trying to help mentor younger players which is why you see so many of them thanking him.

Helluva game last night. Trae Young put on a display.

I still don't think the Hawks win the series, but I'm rooting for them.

One of the few times that the Lakers wasted some prime years of a superstar. That roster was even worse than the garbage that Iverson played with in Philly. It's almost like teams are testing the theory of one man can't win on his own when they do this.

But it was really only three seasons. The Lakers were back in the Finals in 2008.

But yeah those couple seasons there where he dragged those bad Laker teams into the playoffs, he was absolutely at his peak as a player. He was totally unguardable at that time.

I do think though it let him get that being ďthe guyĒ thing out of his system, by allowing him to score at will and see that he really wasnít going to win another title playing that way. So in essence it kind of helped for what was to come.
