Monk was under a confidentiality agreement that prevented him from writing this type of book until the agreement expired. Since he exited in 1984 and the book was released in 2017, and probably required about 2+ years to write/edit, the confidentiality agreement was probably a 30-year window (speculating) expiring in 2014.

Ah, yes, I do recall hearing something about that agreement. My point still kinda stands. lol

It also makes me wonder about the claim that Ed and Al were in Monk's office last year watching old live clips of the band. We can chalk it up to Ed mending fences, but it still seems odd after this book came out.

My opinion is fluid on this, but saying you just want to play music but all the while promoting yourself or consenting to someone else promoting you is an admission that you really want people to hear and pay for what you produce. Nobody goes into entertainment without wanting some sense of validation, recognition, or fame. When you become a public figure, you give up some or a lot of your privacy. People who lament the loss of privacy should have thought about their vanity.

I don't think Al had anything to do with Mike not being in Van Halen anymore.

Noel was a big part of their early era, climb to the top.

Regardless, of what kind of manager you think he is, he was there, and i'm sure
those early bonds are hard to break.

His book really wasn't that harsh, he was pretty complimentary to Ed, especially.
To me, it makes sense they wanted to see him one more time.

The chapter on the South American leg of the Sheep tour, was worth it alone.

Again, he was there when it happened.

I'm not sure how any fan of this band would have no interest in that sort of insight.

I think everyone always knew that Ed and Al would spend ridiculous amounts of time in the studio working on stuff by themselves.

I'm sure guys like Templeman, Monk, Mike, Dave, Sam and Donn Landee have a real good idea of how van halen works.

the guys who I'd love to read a book from is Mike (which I don't think will ever happen) and Donn Landee (which I also don't think will ever happen).

Al has a right to be upset I guess but I honestly don't think you can rag any of the guys who have written books about their time associated with the band.

I agree Monk was a bit harsh towards Al, but it sounded more like Al tried to steal
his GF at one time, and he carried that resentment.
Plus, Al was the one who initiated Monk getting fired.

I thought Ted kinda downplayed Al, as well, in his book.
He mentions how he thinks Joey Kramer is one of the best drummers in rock, but
then remembers how annoyed he was with one of Al's fills.

I can't imagine being that good a drummer, then having your brother, a one in a billion
freak of nature guitar player, sort of getting all the praise, because he's a genius.

Can you imagine if Al was in Krokus or Kiss?

They'd reference him as the "AMAZING drummer in Krokus or Kiss."
