I can name dozens of EVH solos more exceptional. They, and Al's double bass accents during the outro, are quite good and by far the best parts of that song though.

Those two solos are kind of restrained, especially for EVH, and they fit the song absolutely perfectly.

I agree with that. But, again, pretty much all of Ed's solos fit the tunes perfectly.

Well, for the Sam era, I definitely like his toms on OU812 more than the horrendous Simmons sound on 5150 or the overmic'd muddy mess of a tom sound on many of the FUCK tracks like Poundcake; JD etc.

His toms sound great on Balance, too.

Oh,yeah! I also like some tunes on F.U.C.K. that has such a great drum sound.
The same goes with Balance. After that, they got some killer sound on both tunes from the BO Volume 1.

I’m repeating myself here but so do these discussions. I never gave any thought to a lack of lyrics to SOI until I came to this site to read all the kvetching,. I just thought it was an incredible, smoking tune. It’s a raucous, rock and roll jam. I’m not sure why Sam or anyone needs to make apologies for it. Let’s talk about how Little Richards “keepa knockin” only has two lines and one of them is the title of the song….what a lazy, loser.

OU812 Is a weak VH LP for my money 💰, but Ed killed it on this track.
The band may have had too much control in the studio on this album. An outside voice may have helped the weak production etc. who knows, as it’s all rear view mirror at this point

It lacked a producer. Donn Landee is an awesome engineer but not a producer. The weakest VH records are IMO OU812, VHIII and ADKOT. And all 3 didn't use a rock producer. The rest of the VH records sound better because you had TT, Bruce Fairbairn, Andy Johns, Mick Jones - ppl who know what a great rock record is and how to produce one.
