Default Van Halen has the perfect song for 2020/2021!!!

In the middle of all of our debates and our mourning, we missed a key element of VH history. In the year 1988, Van Halen released the perfect song for our current times. Granted, at the time the song didn't make any sense at all. Sammy didn't even write lyrics for the verse, it was a mess. It wasn't released as a single, and was rarely played live, even though, had it benefited from a bit more effort, it could've been one of the best song in the VH catalog.

Fast forward to 2020/2021, it all makes perfect sense. The chaotic verses perfectly reflect the chaos of our times. The song topic, a virus, fits well (unfortunately). And then in the pre-chorus, this gem:

"Fever starts to climb, reaching 105"

That's practically a word for word description of the covid-19 symptoms, 32 years prior. Fucking genius!

Don't like that song, almost always a skip.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I have to agree too. I like what Ed is doing, but Sammy came up with absolutely nothing here.
A perfect example of what was bad about the Hagar era. Crap lyrics, no melody, nothing there.

A waste of some good music.

This was like the Loss of Control of the Hagar era.

Should have been an instrumental. Lyrics added absolutely nothing to the fucking song.

Source of Infection was HFT 2.0 for me. The chorus was fine, but the verses needed lyrics. Either way, I crank this tune loud, as it is some of Eddie's best blistering mastery on the Gee-tar.

I wonder if some of the Hagar era problems stemmed from lack of material. It very much does sound like a Hot For Teacher variant. They couldn't go back to the demos for anything.
The vocals sound more like a jam or demo than a finished track. I mean these are not a serious attempt to write lyrics:
    Hey
    Alright
Whoo how 'bout 'cha now, come on, oh yeah
    Dig it
    That's right
    Is everybody ready?
    Let's go
    up 'n down
(Round and round)Oh, round and round
(Movin' up and down) In 'n out
    (Round and round)
    Yeow
    Crank it, blow out
    Uh, ouch
    Help me
    Now flip on over
Oh baby, you know that I like it (woop, woop, woop)
    she choked the chain
(Round and round) she got the hook
(Movin' up and down) can't get away
    (Round and round) oh
Fever starts to climb, reaching 105
I need another shot o' your love

I've always said that Source of Infection sounds like a hybrid of Hot For Teacher and I'm The One. The lyrics blow, but the music smokes. I dig it.

Sam talks about it in his book, I think. He said they were on such a high from 5150 they thought they could do anything, so he went for a James Brown thing. While Sam admits that OU812 didn't get his best lyrics, I think most of the songs are fantastic lyrically: MAM, WIL, AFU, CABO WABO, FSG and FWYS.

I wouldve liked to hear Dave come up with something for this tune. It was more in his wheelhouse.

I'll still take OU812 over any of the other Sam era albums. They all suffer from occasionally shit lyrics and shrill oversinging by Sam.

IMO, the highlights of OU812 were A.F.U. (Naturally Wired), Source Of Infection and Black And Blue because those songs sounded like vintage Van Halen.
