Ernie Ball owns the shapes and license them to SBMM, hence the ability to make a non Floyd version. It seems it’s just a choice, not a limitation.

The AX40D I am sure was eating too much of the Axis's lunch. I suggested on a Facebook post that might happen, and I think it was dropped about a month later. I switched the trem on mine out for a Gotoh GE-1996T and it is such a close second to my Axis that its too close.

Something I don't get, is as of a year or two ago, finding a used Sterling Axis (non sub or non solid top) became virtually impossible. Particularly, the 40D series. It's like they don't exist anymore!

I guess everyone who has them is holding onto them.

I'm baffled at how few options are available on the MM Axis anymore. They've all but given up on it. I Guess the Sport must be more popular. I love a hardtail Axis.

It was always advertised as a limited edition. Same with the Ash model before it. Only a few hundred were made of each.

Because of Ernie Ball not creating a left handed version of this WITH a body contoured Floyd Rose, I screwed up my left handed OLP MM-1 trying to add one on there.

It’s been too long and for someone whose trying to form a Van Halen tribute band that accesses all eras, I need a left handed gold amber top Music Man Axis.

Outide of anything EVH inspired, I think Ibanez are nailing it these days. The AZ-N line and AZS are amazing. Modern spec with classic lines.

Agreed. I also love how they softened the sharp edges on the headstock.
