Bottom line for me is this: Samís gonna Sam. And Daveís gonna Dave. Doesnít mean we have to start the same old arguments every time either of them slag the other. Iíve never cared for these arguments, and care even less so in the aftermath of Edís passing.

I don't think this has completely turned into a Sam v Dave thing, at least not in my original sentiment. I simply do not want or need Dave to sing the Sam stuff during a Dave-led VH show. I had absolutely no problem that VH didn't play anything from the Sam era during the last 3 tours. I had never seen Dave sing with VH before and was stoked to finally hear those old songs live, even more special were the deep cuts we got.

Love Dave. Love Sam. I have no problem with them limiting their sets to their own respective eras.

The whole Dave vs Sam thing is a part of pop culture. I have been asked numerous times, "Dave or Sam?" when someone finds out I'm a huge Van Halen fan. It's sort of like "Ginger or Mary Ann?"

I'm sure the brothers always loved the music they created with sam in the same way Dave loves the music he created with others as well. Why would any of them not like their own art? But they celebrated they band they created and the art they created together. Dave was never asked and Alex is on record as saying they never would. Nor were the brothers asked to play any of Dave's stuff.
Dave liking his own art or the brothers liking theirs is not a slight against anyone, it is artists being proud of their work period. That pride is true regardless of first wife second wife stuff.
I'm sure reasons artists favor different creations at times but being proud of your own stuff is not uncommon.
I always find it mildly disconcerting when an artist crosses their personal music over to the larger band they are part of, like when Lindsey Buckingham plays one of his solo songs and the rest of Fleetwood Mac just mindlessly fills in behind him. But I do get paying homage to the artist that you are replacing in that band, especially when they maintain the band name. That's the point of having the band name.

But then again, having the original singer replace the replacement, with both still alive and both having tons of popular hits, is unprecedented to any band ever to my knowledge. So you can't blame Dave for not wanting to do something in a situation no one else in the world has ever had to confront.

I would like to think though, if Brian Johnson retires for good and Bon Scott came back from the dead, Bon would sing the later hits -- even if he didn't have the distinctive voice to match the originals. But then again, he may just want to stick to the six albums he wrote.

My answer to the Dave vs Sam question..? Ed...

Then I go on to explain I prefer Ed's compositional style, timings and melodic structures from the material with Roth far more than with Hagar.

I have no idea how one can even ask... Mary Ann over Ginger in a fucking heartbeat!!

As far as the topic, I'd also like to say that while I'm no fan of Sam's childish jabs, I'm probably in the minority in saying I can't blame Sam for acting that way all the time. Is it total insecurity -- yes. But holy shit -- he was in Van Halen. He and Ed were best friends. It wasn't just the best thing that ever happened to him, it's one of the best things to ever happen to anyone in music. And while I recognize how much of the bridge was burned with his own matches, it still has to be an unimaginable amount of hurt to see the guy they bonded over hating coming back to the band. Mocking Sam in public. Getting the big reunion tours, the new album. Lying about and trying to erase one of the bandmate's legacy -- at times literally. It's beyond just taking the high road -- it's something that would require daily therapy. So I get that he's still not over it, and even though the timing feels strange with Ed just having passed, I honestly don't think that changes the emotions too much. Ed being gone only makes the reality that he'll never get that back, never mend that fence, never play with VH again, even more painful.

I also wonder how much of a 'love fest' the phone calls with Ed really were. I can imagine Sam yapping away and Ed just saying things that needed to be said. We'll never know.

I am not Trying to turn anything into a Dave vs Sam what I wrote before. I was giving merits to each one being perfect for Van Halen For the frame they were in. I also do feel that Sammy canít sing Dave stuff, and Dave canít sing Sammy stuff.

Ed wrote music that both sang great for for their particular voice and vocal styles.

I do think without Sammy there after Dave left Van Halen would not been as good.

And I donít for one second believe either one is the end-all that singers. They both fit vanhalen needs at the time.

I donít believe the first 6 albums is the end all when it comes to VH

Their whole body of work To me is perfect to a degree( a few clunkers from both eras are in the mix)
    DAVE vs SAMMY

People need to let this go.....it is like comparing an ex wife to your current wife...you can say how things would have be different if she were still here but she left you, so you moved on with your life.....

Same with Van Halen...would they have liked to have Roth stay, yes...but he decided to leave so they moved on.......

and the rest is historyÖ.. well until 1996ÖÖ..lol

My post wasn't Dave vs Sam. It was Sam is an idiot. Period. Not my guy is better than your guy. My guy's songs are better than your guy's songs. Just that he is an idiot.

Truthfully, I love listening to Sam talk about cars, food, Tequila, world destinations. He is an entertaining and multifaceted guy. Well traveled obviously. Seems pretty fucking intelligent. Motivated. But when he talks VH I cringe because he just can't help himself.

I remember him being asked about comparing Satch to Ed when Chickenfoot put the first album out. He said there was no comparison and all that Eddie ever did was show Sam how to play guitar licks on different parts of the neck. WOW!!! That guy is his own worst enemy when it comes to VH. Satch is a great guitarist but he can't hold a candle to Ed's song writing or as a total package as a rock guitarist. I think even Satch cringed when Sam said that.

I realize that some people feel that its his or her duty to post every little snippet of information that gets published on a website about Van Halen. But come on, we all know the typical stuff that usually that stirs people up in here. I mean seriously, why bother even posting articles like this? There isn't anything new in it.
