There is a lot more to Patti Smith then "Because The Night." She's not everyone's cup of tea - she's not a great singer, she's not very attractive and she can be pretty awkward and abrasive on and off stage but she does have a solid, groundbreaking few albums from the 70's (and continues to occasionally put out a new one every few years) and she was (and is) an authentic, true artist. She certainly belongs in the RnRHoF more than say, Madonna.

I believe she was in the same RRHOF class as Van Halen, correct?

Was she really HOF worthy? I would say yes not because of her performances but because she broke ground in the punk rock genre. She really was doing something with music that was new and differnet. A she was an influence to so many

She won a National Book award and will be forever remembered for her work, but is it rock? Does it matter? Haven't we already gotten to the point with that institution that we recognize they don't know know what rock music is? I mean, Bobby Darin is in there so is Laura Nyro and Darlene Love? All good performers but rock? nyet.

I thought Sam was the perfect choice. They actually were pretty lucky someone like him was available.

LOL. Yeah, fans woulda freaked if Patty was chosen. In totality it doesn't really work. But being a fan of Scandal, at the time, I wouldn't've been that freaked. No one would expect it to last long anyway.
If not VH some kind of project with her woulda been cool. She could sing.

I woulda liked to hear them Van Halenize some Scandal. Beat of a Heart is my fav.

I'd rather Patty than that Gary character.

    Patti Smith was a badass.

I liked how she was a poet/punk, breaking ground with her own thing.

She also was connected with the mighty Blue Oyster Cult, and this song just fascinated
    me as a kid.
I loved the brief, spoken word intro & her haunting backing vocals.

Lyrically, this song resonates with me, in a whole new way due to my current situation.

Wasn't she going to be the lead singer of BOC at one point?

I believe she was just supposed to be a lyricist, and she was also dating Allen Lanier from the band.

Don’t worry Chris they’re not. They sucked. Had their five seconds of fame with the Warrior and they had like one other semi crappy hit Goodbye To You I think it’s called. They were pretty irrelevant. I guess she was cute though. Not my taste.

I can’t believe anyone is going on about how great they were but nothing ceases to amaze me on this site sometimes.

And only on this website would you hear that in 1985 people would’ve been excited about Patty Smythe fronting Van Halen. That would’ve been super lame and super stupid. I can tell you right now that a 14-year-old me would not have been into that at all. People think Van Halen became a “pussy band” with Sammy Hagar in, but somehow would’ve retained all their masculinity with a female lead singer. Only on VHLinks would you read that.

Throw a female singer in the mix. It's the product of a severely coked out alcoholic at the time musician. Ed obviously had a thing for female singers but had absolutely NO CLUE about what made VH great. I'm sorry. I'm a misogynist when it comes to VH.

    The four horseman.
Chris only on this site in the year 2020 would you read that anyone would have been interested in a Van Halen fronted by Patty Smythe in 1985. There was nothing cool about it, interesting, or something that any fan wanted...female or male.

That would have been one of the dumbest moves ever. Thankfully it did not happen. It absolutely would’ve been career suicide. And thankfully somebody stopped Ed from using the wrong head to make band decisions.

I just get a laugh out of hearing that people didn’t want the guy who sang I Can’t Drive 55 in Van Halen, but they were totally gung ho for the chick who fronted a barely relevant band best known for that pop tune the Warrior. Riiiiight. If you were that person in 1985, you needed help.

Like I said, the stuff I read on this site never ceases to amaze me sometimes. Revisionist history is always alive and well on VHLinks. Patty Smthe in VH a good thing...smh.

I tend to agree that its a bit surprising over the Scandal love. To me they were just a flash in the pan band. Had two minor hits that got some airplay but there were so many bands that had two hits to be never heard of again. For me, she was kind of like the Marq Torrien of Pat Benetar. Hey I like the Bulletboys (yes I said that) but when I see Marq, I think of Dave. When I hear The Warrior or Goodbye to You, I think of Pat.

Not saying she isn't talented. Maybe it would have worked for an album but I imagine that would have been the death knell for VH or a likely reunion with Dave about 1989 or so.

Patty Smyth is fine. I like 80’s pop music so I do like The Warrior. My recollection of the time was that she was NOT considered a rock vocalist. Maybe a younger, poppier Pat Benatar at best.

I watched Kate and Allie back in the day mostly because I had a thing for the older daughter. In any case, I remember this episode and am suprised its actually on Youtube but there’s a reason this song was covered, this was the Patty Smyth vibe at the time – cute, perky, poppy, whatever….not Janis Joplin-vibe and certainly not VH-vibe.

So I have to agree with Brett on this - ridiculous idea.

If EVH had decided to use a female singer in 1986, first off I think he may change the band name and start another completely different project.

Patty Smyth is IMO, NOT a good enough singer for VH's songwriting level. Very strange vibrato and simply just not good enough a singer.

BUT... it would be very difficult to match up a female singer with their sound. A solution would be to completely change their style. I could see Eddie giving the middle finger to Warner Bros, and also not caring anyway what the industry thought.

Pat Benetar was too operatic in style and probably not the best fit.

As far as fitting simply the style component only I would maybe use Grace Slick and move the band in a new direction.

Very tricky to get it right.

^^^ I agree. I don't think there would have been any longevity to such a "side project". I guess one upside for some people might be that it may have resulted in Dave being back in VH by the early 90's.

Patty Smyth's account of the whole VH thing was a bit dishonest when she didn't mention the fact that Ed had a thing for her. I find that the Sass Jordan story from 1996 is much more interesting and informative.
