Agreed. I love Patty Smyth as a rock vocalist. She smokes. However, like most on here, just can’t imagine her, or any other female, fronting VH.

I certainly would‘ve been interested in any collaboration between her and EVH, or VH. But I’d be interested in pretty much any collaboration EVH was involved in.

In the end, Hagar was clearly the right choice for the time, and the band was able to successfully add another 10 years of popular music to its legacy.
    SOME VH LINKS CLASSICS

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.
Ok I think that covers everything." Ziggysmalls

"I sense that some of our newer passengers may be nervous due to the sudden turbulence. Please be seated, this is simply a normal part of the periodic ride.
I didn't say we'll get to the destination, but until Alex comes out a says what a complete waste of carbon DLR is, we're still climbing, so strap yourselves in.
Those of you who have been on this ride before, the hottie in the mini will be around shortly with your drinks......." Red

Hagar was the logical and best choice for the time. I understand why Ed was smitten with Patty though, Rock chicks hold a special allure, especially with pipes like hers. Valerie was way prettier though.

Problem wouldn't have been her singing HFT - girls can be hot for teacher too. Problem is she isn't really a songwriter on the level that VH needs.

Great singer but I doubt this would have went well for more than one or two albums. Ed and Alex dodged a bullet. For the most part Ed and Alex got it right with having three great singers in Van Halen being Dave, Sammy, Gary.

It's funny how some are saying it would have been cool or interesting. You say that NOW as an adult. Back then, that would have been THE END of VH imo and as a 14 year old kid I would have shook my head in bewilderment. They would cease to be my favorite band. You think people left when Sam came in? Throw a female singer in the mix. It's the product of a severely coked out alcoholic at the time musician. Ed obviously had a thing for female singers but had absolutely NO CLUE about what made VH great. I'm sorry. I'm a misogynist when it comes to VH.

Patty had a powerhouse voice back then. I usually agree with you but I think she would have worked out. She sang on Letterman once and it was one of the best tv gigs ever for a rocker and tv in the 80s was tough to sound good on even if you were good. She married the tennis player and became a baby factory instead. I recently saw her on you tube singing Warrior and the power in her voice is gone now. It didn't work with Gary because the songs sucked and flannel was destroying rock.

I'm being facetious when I say I'm a misogynist re VH.

Had that happened, it would have killed the momentum following the epic tour and album that was 1984.

Think about this. Legions of teeny bopper girls all of a sudden into VH? Yeah, would have been a great glass-ceiling moment but at what cost? VH had an image and it wasn't soccer moms bringing their pre-pubesent daughters to concerts. That did come later with Sammy but I digress.

Think about how they would have had to totally alter everything to accommodate a women and correct me if im wrong but she was a mother by then yeah?

Powerful vocal chops would have not been enough for me to even consider a change that would have been epicly disastrous imo.

Good thing they went with Sam. I think Gary Cherone should of got the second album IMO the guy could sing

Just to be clear, Iím in no way saying I think she was a viable option to be the singer for VH. Iím talking about what she talked about, which if presented as ďletís make a record togetherĒ and not called it anything near Van Halen, it could have been cool as itís own thing. But the VH name was too big and anything the Van Halen bros were involved with would have been called Van Halen I guess...

    Or, maybe ďVan-dalĒ

She would have been a lesser fit than Sammy. But I'm sure we would've bought the record nonetheless. It would've been the end of EVH's marriage and Wolfie wouldn't exist. Probably would've lasted 1-2 records. To think this band could've had even MORE drama...

Sass knew(or so she say's) the deal, just like Mitch Malloy knew the deal.

A woman wasn't going to be totally accepted after Dave(even less imo, then Sam was by some) and a third singer wasn't going to be accepted after the MTV awards.

We got what we got, and I'm thankful for it.
